Wieland Herold

Wieland Herold (* 1950 ) is a German teacher, games expert and games critic. He is co-founder of the Göttingen game authors meeting and was a member of the jury for the game of the year from 1995 to 2019 .

Life

Wieland Herold studied German and history at the University of Goettingen and came by its own account while studying in 1975 by buying multiple 3M games like Twixt , Speed Curcuit and Acquire to look more closely at board games to occupy. In his childhood in the 1950s and 1960s, he had mostly played card games like Canasta and Doppelkopf, as well as board games like Malefiz , Monopoly , Oil for All of Us and Risk . In 1984 he founded a games group at his school with game afternoons and built up a toy library . He also took part in the German board game championships with the group several times and founded his own magazine, Alea . In 1988 he began to publish game reviews in the Göttinger Tageblatt and from 1992 he established a games section in the Alfelder Zeitung . This was followed by publications in game magazines such as spielbox and der Spielerei , and in 1993 he and his wife Cordula also published the specialist book Tolle Spiele - made yourself with games to build.

Together with the game designer and publisher Reinhold Wittig , Herold conceived the magazine Spiel & Autor as a specialist magazine for game designers and was responsible for the editorial work of this magazine, which was published together with his wife, from 1989. He was also a co-organizer of the Göttingen game authors 'meeting and since 1992 he has been invited to the specialist jury of the Hippodice authors' competition of the Hippodice Spieleclub eV several times. From 1995 to 2019 he was a member of the Game of the Year - jury chose the annual game of the year and at times the breeze and the connoisseur game of the year with out. Afterwards he was a member of the Spiel des Jahres eV as an advisory member. In 2019 he was awarded the Göttinger Spatz , which is awarded at the authors' meeting there, for his services to the game as a cultural asset.

In 1998 Herold became headmaster at the New Gymnasium in Oldenburg and stayed there until his retirement in 2013. He is married to Cordula Herold and has four children. Since 2015 he has also been writing online reviews on his blog "With 80 games through the year".
