Die Spielerei is a specialist magazine whose main focus is the review of board and card games . The magazine has been published quarterly in A5 format since 1986 by Karsten Höser, based in Bochum.

history

The gimmick began in 1985 as a bulletin from the Castrop-Rauxel gaming club . The registered association “Hippodice Spielclub” emerged from the game club. The gimmick was filed at this time the status of the communication form and has developed into a magazine. In addition to the presentation of German-language games, there was also a regular column in which the latest news about games from overseas were presented, as information about these imported games was difficult to find in Germany at that time. Peter Gehrmann was responsible for the editorial work.

The demand for gimmicks grew so that the magazine was spun off from the association in 1990 and continued to be run by the Tingel-Tangel publishing house, which was founded especially for this purpose, under the direction of Christoph Kleinhubbert. After a further three years, in 1992, the publishing and editorial management changed to Karsten Höser, under whose direction the gimmick is to this day. Since then Hubert Bruns (deceased 2018), Ferdinand Köther, Oliver Kühlwein and Manfred Rohmkopf have been at his side. The editorial team is supported by a review base. Articles by well-known authors from the gaming scene can be read regularly.

The first editions were printed in black and white using the fast printing process. From issue 5 the title page appeared in two colors and from issue 19 the cover was printed in four colors. The next graphic change was only visible after 22 years, in 2007 the gimmick got a new logo. The new logo, which now adorns the front page, was created under the leadership of graphic artist Matthias Catrein. For the 2009 international game days in Essen, the game magazine appeared completely in four colors for the first time. With the 101st edition, the rating eggs were also adjusted. Those that had previously appeared in black and white were given a new design in color.

subjects

The focus of the gimmick lies in the presentation and description of board and card games. Not only games from renowned publishers are taken into account, but the main focus is on reviews of games from small and micro publishers. These publishers appear in public mainly on match days in Essen. This also gave birth to the idea of the small publishing rally, which is carried out annually by the "Spielerei" on match days. In addition, there is a further focus on imported games from European, Asian and transatlantic countries. Authors of the various topics and areas include Oliver Armknecht, Matthias Catrein, Stefan Duksch, Wieland Herold , Birgit Irgang, Marcus Janka, Ferdinand Köther, Tina Kraft, Sandra Lemberger, Tanja Liebmann-Décombe, Ralf Sandfuchs, Christoph Schlewinski, Lotte Schüler and Volker Sitzler.

collaboration

Editing and sales work together with other associations and institutions:

  • In addition to its own internet presence, there has been a cooperation with the game internet portal H @ ll9000 since 2002. Interesting articles from older editions of the Spielerei and advance publications of the current, printed editions are made available there.
  • Another cooperation takes place with the further education advice of the city of Bochum. The result is the annual Bochum game list . 20 games that are particularly suitable for families are selected from the novelties that appear. These games are presented and described in the Bochum games list.
  • One of the gimmicks' concerns is the recognition of the work of the small publishers. The Spielerei has been running the small publishing rally at the international match days in Essen since 1998. Visitors to the fair can collect coupons from various small publishers which entitle them to take part in a raffle.
  • The German Games Prize has been awarded since 1990 . Players, game clubs, dealers and journalists take part in the voting process. The readers of the gimmick are specifically written to and asked to participate in the vote. This means that you have a direct influence on the selection of games.
