The first game designers' meeting took place on January 8th and 9th, 1983 in the Künstlerhaus in Göttingen. 50 game designers and game journalists met there. In one of the following years, the meeting was moved to the Göttingen town hall , where it still takes place at the beginning of June every year to this day.

Around 200 game designers and representatives from 40 publishers and agencies took part in the 35th game designers' meeting in 2016. Over 300 game prototypes were presented at the meeting. The meeting was organized by Reinhold Wittig and Hilko Drude from Edition Perlhuhn together with the specialist service for culture of the city of Göttingen.

Over the years, at least 140 games - which were originally presented in Göttingen - were later published by game publishers.

The game authors' guild has been organizing the meeting in cooperation with the city of Göttingen since 2017 .

description

In addition to exchanging experiences, the focus of the meeting is on presenting and trying out new game ideas. As part of the event, authors can present prototypes of their games to other authors, publishers or game journalists and thus establish contacts in the industry and receive feedback for the further development of their ideas. On the second day of the event, the meeting is open to the general public, who can watch and try out the games presented on site.

Since 1998, the Inno-Spatz Prize of the City of Göttingen has been awarded at the game authors ' meeting, with which people, institutions or associations are honored for special services to the game as a cultural asset. A forerunner of the prize was awarded on the initiative of Reinhold Wittig between 1985 and 1990. The winners include a. Wolfgang Kramer (1986), Erwin Glonnegger (1987), Alex Randolph (1990), Klaus Teuber , the online portal BoardGameGeek (2010), the Nuremberg Toy Fair (2015) and the European Game Collectors Guild (2016).

In addition, the Game of the Year jury award has been awarded annually to young authors since 1995 with the game designer grant . The award enables the scholarship holders to gain insight into different areas of the gaming industry through four one-week internships. The scholarship holders include a. Paul Schulz (2017), Marco Kujat (2016), Sophia Wagner (2015), Janosh Kozák (2014) and Marco Teubner (2003).
