The Stadthalle Göttingen is an event hall on the eastern edge of the old town of Göttingen . It is located opposite the Albanikirche on Albaniplatz and the former ramparts of the city. The city hall, like the Göttingen locomotive hall , is operated and managed by the city's own GWG Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung und Stadtentwicklung Göttingen mbH .

Edification

The Göttinger Stadthalle was built by the architect Rainer Schell from Wiesbaden as a music and congress hall and was put into operation on September 1, 1964. The architecture, which was new at the time, especially the unusual facade design in iridescent purple ceramics, initially led to heated discussions among the Göttingen population in the 1960s. The same applied to the bronze relief Die Stadt by Jürgen Weber on the west side , which was perceived as too drastic in its depiction and therefore aroused indignation. What has remained from this criticism is the affectionately derisive nickname " Kachelofen" .

At the time of the gate lock, the property of the town hall was directly in front of the Albanitor, the eastern town gate of Göttingen. The large bakery of the garrison of the Electorate of Hanover was located on the property . This was in the Seven Years' War quite capable, for 20,000 troops every three days Kommissbrot to bake per capita. After the war, the bakery was given up by the army in 1763 and sold to the city of Göttingen. When the property was sold, the stables were still used by the veterinary pioneer Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben . After he moved out, the city handed the area over to the wine merchant Wacker for use as a garden restaurant so that the quality of stay for the students in Göttingen could be improved. Lodges that became fashionable in the second half of the 18th century also used the economy as a meeting place. In 1794 the inn was transferred to Johann Heinrich Ulrich , as Wacker had got into financial difficulties due to the poor economy of its manager and could not pay off his debts to the popular Göttingen doctor Johann Friedrich Stromeyer , who also promoted the development of Mariaspring as an excursion restaurant. Ulrich operated billiard tables , which were forbidden as gambling within the city walls . His name was quickly associated with the restaurant, which was now called Ulrichs Garten . People went to Ulrich and this became a popular meeting place for the country teams and corps of the early 19th century. In 1817 there was an uproar on the Ulrich when the Hanoverian Heinsius got into a dispute with another student over a dance order at a dance event and shot him on the dance floor. The first Göttingen monument to the poet Gottfried August Bürger from the workshop of the sculptor brothers Heyd in Kassel was also located in Ulrich's garden . After Ulrich, the name of this Göttingen institution changed with the hosts and in the 19th century was first called Sehlen's garden and then Marwedel's garden . In 1890, after her death, it turned out that Mrs. Marwedel had already quietly sold the restaurant to the owners of the Felsenkeller brewery in Herford . They expanded the building considerably and named the complex Stadtpark . An auxiliary hospital was set up here during the First World War. The city park was bought by the Göttingen brewery in 1919 . After a fire in 1955, the ruins of the city park were torn down.

Event during the Göttinger Historikertag 2014

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in Göttingen on the journey to Bad Pyrmont from June 6 to 12, 1801. He notes in his diary:

“Sunday the 7th. Repeated the same stroll with the wage servant early in the morning, taking a closer look at the individual. In Ulrich's garden citizen's monument. What is remarkable about it is the rope with which the Schleyer is tied to the button of the urn, it makes up a striking part of the whole. "

Redevelopment

Since Monday, November 19, 2018, the town hall has been closed for more than 2 years due to renovation.

For this purpose, the town hall is almost completely gutted. The distinctive tiles should be removed and well-preserved tile elements integrated into the new facade.
