The Lokhalle Göttingen (own spelling: LOKHALLE ) is a multi-purpose hall in the university town of Göttingen in Lower Saxony . It is located on the side of the train station facing away from the city center in the Weststadt . The operator of the Lokhalle is the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung und Stadtentwicklung Göttingen mbH (GWG) , which also manages the Göttingen Stadthalle .

history

In 1855 a machine workshop for steam locomotives was opened in Göttingen . Before and during the First World War , the railway facilities in Göttingen were then considerably modified and expanded. As part of this development, the building of today's locomotive hall was erected between 1917 and 1920 as a locomotive straightening hall in the repair shop for railways . Major repairs were carried out here, especially on locomotives that were used from Göttingen on the north-south route and the Dransfeld ramp . The locomotive shed 'opposite' belonging to the depot was demolished in 2006.

After the plant was closed and dismantled in 1976, the Deutsche Bundesbahn sold its 85,000 m² site in 1983 to the contractor Ebel. With the exception of the Lokrichthalle, which was included in the provisional list of architectural monuments in 1981, and an office building that is still in use today, Ebel Bau tore down the buildings on it in 1984. In 1987 the highly indebted city of Göttingen bought the site between the train station and Leine and transferred it to the GWG in 1995. In a usage concept for a significantly larger area, based on designs by the Göttingen architect Jochen Brandi , a much larger western entrance to the station, a tower bridge over the station avenue as a connection to the locomotive hall, a leisure pool and a shop center in the locomotive hall were planned. First of all, a much larger western entrance to the train station (already expanded to include ICE tracks) including parking lots, a multi-storey car park and the 'Bahnhofsallee' street including bridges were built, including several multi-storey residential buildings (including a former hotel and a car dealership) on Groner Landstrasse were demolished. The industrial monument, which had not been destroyed in a number of air raids , fell into disrepair over two decades. In 2010, at the request of the CDU, a place at the locomotive hall was named Jochen-Brandi-Platz, which was extended in 2016 and a small wood was thinned to the leash.

Todays use

In 1993 there were again specific plans for the use of the locomotive repair hall. A six-story labor exchange complex was built. In 1996, Hans-Joachim Flebbe opened one of his CinemaxX large cinemas ( multiplex cinema ) with nine halls in a renovated northern quarter of the huge hall , which led to the death of a cinema. The event area in the southern area of the Lokhalle opened in December 1998. In 1999, the new building of the adult education center and the media house followed, into which the regional studio of the NDR moved in September 1999 . An InterCityHotel opened in 2000 and, many years later, a building next to it that was mainly used as a medical center. On the site of the former repair shop there are restaurants, a snack bar, streets and parking lots.
