Game box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spielbox is a public magazine for board and card games that is published seven times a year (since 2010 also in English) . It is considered to be the board game magazine with the highest circulation in the world. In addition to game reviews for newly released games, it contains trade fair reports, news for gamers and collectors, series, portraits, interviews and tips on well-known games. The hobby player trade journal has been published since 1981; since 1993 it has been published by W. Nostheide Verlag Memmelsdorf .

history

The first edition appeared in October 1981 (issue no. 4/81) by Courir Druck und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, a subsidiary of Vorwärts Verlag GmbH, in Bonn . Its managing director was Friedhelm Merz , who later founded the Friedhelm Merz publishing house. The initial print run was 40,000 copies. Initially the magazine appeared quarterly as "SpielBox", and from 1985 six times a year. It has been published seven times a year since 2009.

The first editorial team consisted of Helmut Morell, Reiner Müller and Lothar Romain . Reiner Müller was the creator and implementer of the new foundation and became de facto editor-in-chief without this position already nominally existing. The review team at that time comprised seven people: Walter Luc Haas †, Helge Andersen , Jochen Corts , Synes Ernst , Edgar Forschbach †, Gilbert Obermair † and Eberhard von Staden . Knut-Michael Wolf was responsible for the “Better Play” section .

With issue 1/87 the magazine switched to the Huss publishing house in Munich. Reiner Müller was now designated as editor-in-chief. This change of publisher can be recognized on the booklets by the pentagonal logo moved from the center to the left. From issue 5/87 Bernd Becker became editor-in-chief, who then also revised the appearance of the issue and changed the name to "spielbox". The Huss-Verlag published the Spielbox with changing editors-in-chief until the end of 1992, then the “w. nostheide verlag “the magazine and Harald Hemmerlein became editor-in-chief (from issue 1/93). The current editor-in-chief Matthias Hardel took over the editor-in-chief with issue 1/02. He was previously editor-in-chief of the Pöppel-Revue , which ceased its publication when he left.

Structures

Edition

In 2007 the print run was 13,000 copies. The 5th edition, which appears on the occasion of the international game days in Essen , has a print run of 16,000 copies. It is partly distributed through station bookshops and specialist games stores, but mainly through a subscriber base.

Edition game box

Right from the start, "the game that can be taken out" was - with a few exceptions - an integral part of the booklet, with issue 1/93 it was named "Edition spielbox". These supplements came from the pen of well-known game designers such as B. Reiner Knizia , Alex Randolph or Sid Sackson . For the graphics were u. a. Franz Vohwinkel , Doris Matthäus and Christof Tisch are responsible. Initially, these games were elaborately designed (e.g. larger game boards, folded several times). The game in the first edition was a German in-house development ( Quadriga by Ludger Fischer, Jürgen Franke and Bernd Lindenberger). After that, games were taken over for a while, which were included in the French magazine Jeux & Stratégie . Later mainly additions to well-known games came out, for example the scenario The Fishermen of Catan in 2005 or an addendum to the game The Pillars of the Earth in 2007 .

Further publications

In addition to the magazine, there has also been an Internet portal since 1997 with several forums that emerged from “Knut-Michael Wolfs Spielplatz”. In the gaming scene, this forum has long been considered the most important German-speaking forum.

In 2007, the publishing program was expanded to include the magazine "spielböxchen", which had previously been published once a year in A5 format and which is exclusively dedicated to children's games. It was first published on October 10, 2007. At the same time, a web-based special children's play forum was newly set up.

Since 1980 there has been the "International Industry Letter - Current Toy Industry" published by Nostheide-Verlag as an information service for the toy industry.
