List of Carcassonne extensions

Carcassonne with several extensions

The list of Carcassonne expansions includes all expansions designed for the base game . Carcassonne enjoyed great and lasting demand within a very short period of time. The Hans im Glück Verlag reported that a lot of feedback has been received from players who ask for more landscape maps, which has resulted in the introduction of expansions.

The game principle remains essentially the same. Extensions primarily extend the playing time, but also allow more people to play. Large extensions are measured at around a quarter of an hour. They also introduce smaller additions, with new playing figures and new images on the cards enabling further actions. A Carcassonne game can be extended considerably with the expansions and several basic games. In general, the extensions can be combined as required. However, the effects of the expansions among each other are not sufficiently described, especially for the mini expansions.

For technical reasons, the extensions are always subject to deviations in the printing colors; the green of the meadows is different, but the backs of the tiles sometimes show clear differences. Many players see this as a disadvantage, because when you move a tile you can see from which expansion it comes. The extent to which a strategic advantage actually arises from this recognizability is controversial. In addition to the option of drawing the cards “blindly”, the publisher has included a cloth bag with its second expansion from which the cards can be drawn. Since this quickly repels the edges of the platelets, there are several suppliers of card dispenser towers or the "official" card tower of the 4th expansion as a noble alternative to the bag .

To separate games without certain extensions, the extensions have been provided with their own small symbol since 2008.

The extensions available so far are discussed below. There are currently ten official expansions with a larger scope, as well as 36 mini-expansions that supplement the game with small details.

Big extensions

The major expansions have a scope of 12 to 30 cards and extensive rule changes. They are distributed like the basic game and extend the playing time by a quarter of an hour each.

Taverns and cathedrals (1st extension)

The first expansion comes with figures for a sixth player

The expansion brings 18 new landscape cards into play. Particularly groundbreaking are the cathedrals, which, if completed, increase the points in this city by half (three instead of two points per tile), and the inns, which double the points on the nearby street. In the case of non-completion, the players get nothing.

Furthermore, there are now six tiles that show the points when you go around the bar.

The expansion also includes supporters in gray for a sixth player as well as a large supporter for each game party, who can be used like a small one, but count as two small ones in the majority decision regarding the points.

The title taverns and cathedrals for this extension has only found itself in the course of time. Originally it was just called The Extension . Since 2008 the cards have been printed with a small henchman to separate them for games without certain extensions.

The extension also appeared in the design of the New Edition . However, the followers for the sixth player are no longer gray, but pink. The expansion also includes a sixth, pink character ( The Abbot ) for the mini expansion of the same name , which is included in the new edition . There are also gardens for this mini extension on two of the landscape tiles.

Traders and builders (2nd expansion)

With the second expansion, 24 new landscape cards come into play. There are 20 maps with city districts with one of the three commodity symbols “wine”, “grain” and “cloth”. The player who completes a city with goods is given the existing goods symbols in the form of goods tiles. In the final scoring, ten points are awarded for each category of goods to the player who owns the most tiles in this category. If several players have the same number of commodity tiles in one category, each receives ten points.

Each player receives one of the new figures “Builder” and “Pig”. You can place the builder in a city or on a street where there is already at least one of your own followers. If the area in which the builder is standing will continue to be built in the next turn, another card may be drawn and placed in any suitable place.

The pig can be placed on a meadow on which the player has at least one farmer. If you have a majority for this meadow in the final scoring, you receive an additional point per city.

A characteristic of this expansion is the ability to close a city or a street of the opponent in order to get hold of the city's goods or to remove the opposing builder from the game.

The extension also contains a cloth bag, which corresponds to the accessory item le sac .

Since 2008 the cards have been printed with a little pig to separate them for games without certain extensions.

The extension also appeared in the design of the New Edition .

Damsel and dragon (3rd expansion)

The expansion, published in February 2005 for the Nuremberg Toy Fair , contains 30 new landscape tiles as well as the two wooden figures "Dragon" and "Fee".

The dragon is brought into play by means of the volcanoes . If a new volcano is drawn, the dragon moves there. The dragon draws a total of six times each time a card with a dragon symbol is drawn. With the exception of the manor from the 5th expansion , all figures that are not protected by the fairy or are located in the count city or a castle must be taken back. This is almost impossible when you play two or three people, which is why it is sometimes recommended that the first make two moves, then the second two, then the first or the third two.

If a card with a damsel is placed in a city, the player can either remove or place a henchman from the city. During the magic walk, he can place a henchman in any vacant and unfinished project.

The fairy is placed as an alternative to a follower, preferably one of his own. It protects against the kite and earns the player one point if it is still standing with a follower at the start of the move, and three additional points when the project ends.

Since 2008 the cards have been printed with a little fairy to separate them for games without certain extensions. The extension also appeared in the design of the New Edition .

The tower (4th extension)

The tower extension, published in February 2006, includes 18 new landscape tiles with a tower foundation. In addition, the extension has a card dispenser in the form of a tower that has space for around 170 cards.

Instead of a follower, a part of the tower from your own fund can be placed on a foundation or a tower that has already been started. As the tower grows, its influence on horizontally and vertically adjacent fields increases. If there is an opposing follower within his range, he will be captured. Captured followers can either be exchanged or bought back with points. Tower projects may only be completed with normal or large meeples. The following figures may not be captured: Pig, builder (both 2nd extension ), manor ( 5th extension ), within the city of Carcassonne ( 6th extension ), within a castle ( 8th extension ), the shepherd ( 9th extension ) as well as all neutral figures. Since 2008, the cards have been printed with a small tower to separate them for games without certain extensions.

The extension also appeared in the design of the New Edition .

Abbey and Mayor (5th expansion)

The expansion has twelve new landscape tiles as well as three new figures for each player (“Gutshof”, “Wagen” and “Mayor”) and an “Abbey card” for each player.

The abbey card may be placed in a "gap" closed on all four edges in the playing field without having to take into account the continuation of street sections, city districts or meadows. It is rated like a monastery.

Instead of a follower, the manor can be placed on the intersection of four “meadow tiles” and at the end of the game earns one point more per city than normal farmers. When setting up an estate, a farmer can already be lying in the meadow, who is then compensated similar to the final settlement. Other farmers will be compensated to a lesser extent as part of the merging of the meadows. The car can be used instead of a henchman. If an area on which the wagon is parked is scored, it may be moved directly to an orthogonally or diagonally adjacent, incomplete project, but not a meadow. The mayor can also be installed in a city instead of a henchman. When calculating the majority, the mayor counts as much as there are coats of arms in the city.

With this expansion it is complained that the many other followers lose the charm of housework and quick withdrawal of the figures. The manor is also seen as too powerful.

The cards have been printed since 2008 with a small estate to separate games without certain extensions.

The extension also appeared in the design of the New Edition .

Graf, König and consorts (6th expansion)

The sixth expansion consists of a total of 36 cards and contains the individually available mini-expansions The Count of Carcassonne (twelve cards), King and Robber Baron (seven cards; corresponds to King and Scout without the five cards for The Hunters and Gatherers ), The River II (twelve cards) as well as the new mini expansion The cult site and the heretic .

This mini expansion consists of five new landscape tiles, each of which shows a place of worship. The cards are shuffled into the game and placed according to the usual rules. The place of worship is used like a monastery. The follower standing on it is called a heretic. If a player places a place of worship card next to a monastery card, the heretic challenges the monk. The challenge is about who finished their building first. Upon completion, the winner receives nine points, the loser receives nothing.

The cards have been printed with a small crown for separation for games without certain extensions since 2008.

The extension has also been available in the New Edition design since March 2017 . The twelve cards of the mini expansion The Count of Carcassonne have been replaced by two 2 × 3 cards. Markers were also included to mark the largest city and longest street.

The catapult (7th expansion)

In addition to a wooden catapult and a measuring stick, the expansion contains twelve new landscape tiles depicting a fair, as well as four different catapult tiles for each player, which are distributed at the start of the game.

If a landscape card with the fair is drawn and laid out, a catapult round follows. The player who placed the fairground card chooses one of his catapult tiles, which is then thrown with the help of the catapult. His fellow players follow in turn and throw the same tile. Depending on the choice of tile, different goals must be met. This can have the consequence that followers have to return to the supply or be exchanged or that the player gets additional points.

The game principle of the 7th expansion is criticized in internet forums and purchase reviews. By using the catapult and the associated “ luck factor ”, the tactics and strategy elements typical of Carcassonne were left behind .

The cards are printed with a small catapult for separation for games without certain extensions.

This extension was the only one of the extensions that appeared at the time of the old design that was not published in the new design and is no longer distributed by the publisher.

Bridges, castles and bazaars (8th expansion)

The eighth expansion was presented at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in February 2010 and consists of twelve new landscape tiles, twelve wooden bridge elements and twelve castle tiles. Bridges and castles are distributed to the players at the beginning.

If a card with the new element “Bazaar” is drawn and placed, an “auction round” follows, in which the other players in turn submit bids for additional landscape tiles and can purchase them.

The bridge elements can also be placed in one move if a road is to be continued, but cannot with the current one. They bridge the two edges of the meadow on a suitable card and are scored like normal road elements.

When a city is formed from two semicircular city districts, a player can decide whether to score the city normally or to develop it into a castle instead. To do this, he places the tile on the city and a follower on the tile. If a building in the area, the six adjoining cards, is completed, the lord of the castle and the owner of the building are awarded the points. Meadows do not count, the lord of the castle cannot cancel the rating in the hope of a higher quality building.

The cards are printed with a small bridge to separate them for games without certain extensions.

Sheep and Hills (9th expansion)

The ninth expansion, published in February 2014 for the Nuremberg Toy Fair , consists of 18 landscape tiles, 16 sheep and 2 wolf tiles, in a cloth bag and six shepherds.

Among the landscape maps there are some with a vineyard. If these are placed in the immediate vicinity of a monastery, the player receives three extra points per vineyard on completion of this. For the cards with a hill, another card is placed face down under them. In the event of a tie, the player who has a follower on such a hill receives the points; the other goes away empty-handed.

The shepherd is brought into play instead of a henchman and placed on a meadow. It does not matter whether another henchman owns the meadow. At the beginning and when the player expands the meadow, he draws a tile from the cloth bag. If he draws a sheep tile, he places it with the shepherd. If it is a wolf, the sheep tokens are put in the bag and the shepherd is put back in your hand. If the player wants to collect the points, he must do so by investing again. He no longer draws a tile, but receives points for the number of sheep in the flock. If the dragon from the 3rd expansion (damsel and dragon) enters a field on which a shepherd (with his sheep tiles) is standing, he eats the shepherd and all of his sheep.

The cards are printed with a little sheep for separation for games without certain extensions.

Clear the ring! (10th extension)

The tenth major expansion presented at the Nuremberg Toy Fair appeared in March 2017 . It is the first major expansion that appears exclusively in the design of the New Edition .

The expansion consists of 20 new landscape tiles, 16 animal tiles, a red circus tent and six ring directors in the six player colors. The animal tiles show different animals with different scores. The new landscape cards contain symbols for the circus field or for a " meeple pyramid" made up of artists (artist cards). The animal tiles are placed face down on the edge of the field.

When placing a landscape tile with a place for the circus tent, an animal tile is first placed face down on it and the circus tent is placed on it. If another card with a campsite is drawn, the circus tent moves from its old location to the new one. A scoring is triggered for all the characters around the old circus tent, depending on the points on the animal tile under the tent. The animal token is then removed from the game for this game.

If an artist card is placed (for a "meeple pyramid"), you place your pawn on one of the two special places. If another card is placed around it, the second place is also occupied. When placing a third card, the pawn is placed on the shoulders of the other two pawns; the “meeple pyramid” is complete. When a fourth card is placed, points are scored; each of the three figures gets five points. The figures in the pyramid can belong to different players.

Like a normal pawn, the ringmaster can be placed on a street, a path or a monastery or on a meadow. If he triggers a scoring, he receives two additional points for each circus or artist tile on which he stands or which surrounds it.

Mini extensions

The mini-extensions are mostly promotional gifts e.g. B. at game fairs (give-aways) or are included in a magazine, which therefore do not reach the normal market. This can lead to a limitation and thus a complete sale. For example, special promo cards for Carcassonne - New Edition were distributed for the international match days in 2014, 2015 and 2016 . However, some mini-expansions are distributed quite regularly like the large expansions.

The manufacturer of the basic game is not always that of the mini-expansions.

Give-aways

From the mini-expansions some were given out again and again for marketing purposes free of charge or added to the basic game. Some of them were later sold separately commercially.

The river

The players, one after the other, form the course of a river from the twelve cards with which the game is started instead of the starting card. The depicted river itself only has a decorative function.

The river extension was originally published free of charge by the publisher, e.g. B. at the SPIEL 2001 in Essen and is no longer available in stores. Remaining stocks are still sold in the online shop. The originals of the publisher have a very high collector's value and the high demand for them leads to offers in Internet auctions with sometimes horrific prices. Despite this development, from which the publisher distances itself, no new edition will be offered. The river can be downloaded as a PDF , printed out and made by yourself.

The unexpected success of the expansion has led the game publisher to publish a revised version in June 2005 with the title Der Fluss II .

The extension is also included with the Carcassonne Limited Edition , as well as the Big Box Edition 2014 , but has been supplemented with symbols for the sheep and hills extension and is also referred to as River III . To separate games without certain extensions, the cards were printed with a river symbol (three wavy lines).

The river I was included in the revised design of the new edition from 2014. One of the cards was supplemented with a garden for the also enclosed mini extension The Abbot .

The crop circles

The extension consists of six cards, each with a crop circle in addition to the usual landscape elements .

There are three different crop circle symbols that affect followers in a meadow, street, or town. When laying out a crop circle map, the active player determines whether his fellow players must move one of their followers to another in the corresponding area or remove them from the area.

The mini-expansion was initially only available for specialist retailers via a special edition of the basic game. After the special edition had been sold, the extension was available from the publisher. However, it is no longer available. With the minis, a card of the second version is included in each of the six boxes .

The cards were printed with a small ear to separate them for games without certain extensions.

The party

The mini expansion consists of ten new landscape cards and is part of the anniversary edition . However, it is now also available separately. Since the cards appeared for the 10th Carcassonne anniversary in 2011, they are marked with a “10” surrounded by fireworks .

When a player has laid out a festival card, he may either place his own figure on this landscape card according to the usual rules or take one figure back from the entire display into his supply.

The mini-expansion is also included in a special version of the base game of the New Edition . The cards are marked with a “15” surrounded by fireworks. In addition, the cards have been expanded to include a symbol for the gardens of the mini-expansion The Abbot included with the new edition .

The compass roses

The mini expansion The Compass Roses consists of six landscape cards with compass rose symbols. A new start card divides the playing field into north and south according to the cardinal points. By placing another compass rose card in “his” section, the player receives three points regardless of other scores. The blue compass rose changes this. The mini-extension could be purchased at the Modell-Hobby-spiel 2012 in Leipzig, during the Carcassonne-on-Tour- Events and since November 2013 also in stores. It was also included in the 5/2013 issue of spielbox magazine with redesigned cards and slightly modified rules .

The besiegers

The besiegers is a mini expansion consisting of six landscape tiles. In addition to the American version Cult, Siege and Creativity with four completely different landscape tiles, which was published in 2008, this now forms the continuation of the besiegers (Siege) and the Cathars. The rules for this are the same as for the previously separately published mini-expansion The Cathars . However, the cards themselves are designed differently. A small helmet is shown on the cards to separate them from other cards.

The extension is part of a special edition distributed exclusively by the Müller retail chain . This is in addition to the basic game and the sixth extension Graf, King and his associates at. The mini-expansion has also been available in the publisher's online shop since October 2014.

Game 1X

These cards are promotional cards that have been included with purchases from the publisher at SPIEL since 2014 . They can only be purchased there or during an Advent campaign by the publisher. They don't have any special rules.

Darmstadt is playing

Darmstadtspiele is another mini expansion that was published by Spielekreis Darmstadt on the occasion of its 20th anniversary in 2014. In addition to mini-extensions for Hugo - the castle ghost , Zooloretto , The Settlers of Catan and Village Port, it also includes three landscape tiles for Carcassonne , which show Darmstadt buildings. Two are monastery cards and show the Russian Chapel and the Church of St. Ludwig , the other is a city card showing the Darmstadtium . For all three cards there are extended rules for counting points. The expansion was only available at the international match days and the “Darmstadt plays” event in 2014.

The cards were printed with a stylized lily from the Darmstadt city arms to separate games without specific extensions.

The abbot

The abbot is his own character for the new edition of the game. It can be placed in place of a normal meeple on a monastery or a garden, which were drawn on the cards especially for this expansion. A garden is rated like a monastery. However, the abbot has a special property that you can score him even if you do not place any other pawn, regardless of whether all eight tiles are placed around the monastery or the garden.

spielbox mini extensions

In addition to reviews of the individual games, the game magazine spielbox also repeatedly publishes mini-extensions, which can sometimes also be purchased later in the Hans im Glück Verlag online shop . In addition to the ones listed below, the expansion The Wind Roses in issue 5/2013 was also included with redesigned cards and slightly modified rules .

The cards, with the exception of the Cathars , a small regular pentagon printed for separation for games without certain extensions.

The Cathars

The mini expansion by Christwart Conrad consists of four landscape cards , each with a “besieged” district. Thematically, the expansion takes place in the 13th century, when Pope Innocent III. called for a crusade against the Cathars . Carcassonne was considered a Cathar stronghold.

The new landscape tiles have an impact on the scoring of cities and meadows. A besieged city loses value and counts one point less per card on completion. If it is not completed by the end of the game, it is not counted at all. In contrast, the value of a besieged town doubles at the end of the game for the farmers on the meadow.

The cards were included with both the Carcassonne Almanac and issue 5/2004 of spielbox , a games magazine published by Nostheide. Both journals are no longer available from the publisher. A redesigned version of the Cathars is part of the English mini-expansion Cult, Siege and Creativity .

The place of worship

The mini-expansion, already known from Graf, König and the like, was named Die Kultstätte together with the mini-expansion Neue Hütten for the game Stone Age, which was published at the end of August 2008 by Hans im Glück Verlag. Almanac at.

The tunnel

The mini expansion consists of four landscape cards and twelve marker chips and was included in the magazine spielbox in its 6/2009 issue. The magazine was published in October 2009 and is now out of print.

The roads do not end at the tunnels, but only when two tunnel ends are marked with markers in their own color. Roads that approach a tunnel without a marker are considered incomplete. The players can decide whether only the four cards of this expansion are valid or all with tunnels.

The plague

This is a mini-expansion that was enclosed with spielbox magazine in its 6/2010 issue and developed by Christwart Conrad. The magazine was published on October 19, 2010 and is now out of stock. Individual extensions can still be purchased.

The expansion consists of six landscape cards, six plague herd cards and 18  flea chips.

First 17 cards must be played before a plague hearth card is drawn. Starting from the plague source, the flea chips must then be placed horizontally or vertically per move to the plague area. When a new plague hearth arises, the chips are placed there. When all 18 have been laid out, starting with the plague hearth with the lowest number, the flock is turned over. All associated chips are turned to inactive. However, at least one stove must remain. The inactive chips are then taken and placed there by the oldest plague hearth. If areas grow together, inactive chips are reactivated. In the current plague area, as soon as all 18 chips are in place, they are moved within the area.

While the plague is raging, one follower can be moved anywhere within the structure per turn. If followers are reached by the plague, the players must take them back.

As with all expansions, with the exception of the card holder from spielbox magazine , the cards were printed with a small regular pentagon to separate games without certain expansions.

The houses

The houses is a mini extension that was included in the 5/2012 issue of spielbox magazine and has also been available in stores since November 2013.

The expansion does not contain any new landscape tiles, but consists of 18 house tiles, which are distributed evenly to the other players at the beginning and can be placed in place of a follower. There are three different types of houses: six houses, towers and sheds. When scoring, areas with adjacent houses receive additional points.

Half so wild I

Halb so wild I is a mini-expansion that was enclosed with spielbox magazine in issue 5/2014. It consists of twelve "half" triangle cards, which differ in design from Halb so wild II . A regular pentagon is shown on the cards to distinguish them from other expansions .

Each player receives two triangle cards. Instead of regularly drawing a card, the player can alternatively place one of his triangle cards. Only the short sides are allowed to touch the other cards. The monastery is considered finished when another triangle card is placed in the area.

SpielDoch! -Mini-Expansions

From the magazine SpielDoch! an extension has been issued so far. The cards were printed with "SD" (SpielDoch) for games without certain extensions.

the maze

Issue 1/2016 of the magazine SpielDoch! included two special path plates; one in the original design and one in the design of the new edition . Meeples are placed on the labyrinth and on the adjacent streets . It is scored when all paths are completed. Whoever has the majority in the labyrinth and on the adjacent paths receives one point for each card and two points for each meeple.

Mini extensions designed for sale

The following mini-expansions were brought onto the market directly:

le sac (accessory)

It is a cloth bag printed with the colored Carcassonne logo. It is primarily used to draw landscape tiles face down. It was published in 2002, but is now out of print. The dealer and builder expansion comes with a similar bag that serves the same purpose. Its imprint is only black.

King and Scout

The King and Scout expansion consists of twelve new cards.

Five landscape tiles can be integrated into the basic game. Furthermore, with the help of the two cards “King” and “Robber Baron”, additional points can be made at the end of the game. The player who completes the largest city first receives the king and at the end of the game receives one point for each completed city. The robber baron is the equivalent of the king for the streets. With each expansion of the game, the cards represent an ever greater power. Whoever owns the cards can decide the game for themselves. It is therefore sometimes recommended to only award half a point per city or street.

The seven cards for the basic game are also included in the 6th expansion Graf, König und Konsorten . They are no longer produced individually.

For the independent Carcassonne variant Die Jäger und Collector , the mini expansion contains five cards that are drawn by fellow players before the game starts. They can be used during the game and also allow additional points or bonuses.

The Count of Carcassonne

The extension consists of twelve cards and a wooden figure.

The twelve cards are laid out before the game and put together to form the city of Carcassonne. The city displayed replaces the actual starting card from the basic game. If a player closes an area by placing his card, so that an opponent receives points, but the player who is on the move does not, he may place one of his followers in a district of Carcassonne and move the wooden figure “Count”. Carcassonne itself consists of the four districts of castle, forge, cathedral and market, which correspond to the well-known areas of city, street, monastery and meadow. If there is a scoring in the further course of the game, the players in turn may move followers from the relevant district of Carcassonnes to the area to be scoring in order to change the majority. However, the count blocks followers who are in the same district as him.

The Count of Carcassonne is also part of the Graf, König und Konsorten expansion .

The river II

Since the limited edition of the mini expansion The River was sold out quickly, the publisher decided to publish a sequel. Under the name The Flow II , a limited edition was delivered to dealers in June 2005 again.

Like The River , this expansion also consists of twelve landscape tiles that can be used together with the basic game. The differences to the first river maps are a "river fork" and elements from the first three major expansions on the maps.

This single extension is now also out of print. Due to the great demand, Der Fluss II was finally added to the expansion Graf, König and Co. and is also in the Big Box Edition 2008 .

The entourage

The entourage consists of a small transparent plastic box in the shape of a follower, which contains six colored-transparent playing figures (called "phantom"), one for each player. The plastic box is available in six different colors - yellow, red, blue, purple, green and black. The publication date was March 15, 2011.

The players have the option of placing their phantom as a second henchman on a card that has just been placed. The phantom then acts like a normal henchman. Alternatively, the phantom can also be placed individually, as an eighth follower. Compatibility problems exist here with the Carcassonne anniversary edition , in which the normal followers are also made of this transparent plastic.

The school

The school consists of two landscape cards that together depict a school, as well as a teacher figure and a small cloth bag in random colors. All of the proceeds will go to the "Rainbow over Ghana" association to finance a school project at Lake Bosumtwi in Ghana . The mini-expansion premiered in a combination with the Dominion Carcassonne promotion card at the Essen game fair SPIEL '11 , but is now also available separately.

The cards are attached directly to the start card. The aim is to supply the school with students by closing at least one of the five exiting streets. As a reward, the respective player receives the teacher until the next evaluation in the game, in which he fully participates. Then the teacher comes back to school.

Carcassonne Minis 1 to 7

These mini extensions were presented at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in early 2012 . Each of the six expansions consists of eight cards, different pieces of wood and rules of the game. In addition, each of the expansions also contains a "Crop circles" card. The rules for this are the same as for the previously separately published mini expansion Crop circles . However, the cards themselves are designed differently. The publishing house hobby world, which sells Carcassonne in Russia, released a special extension under the name Дворяне и Башни ( German  nobles and towers ), which includes all seven minis.

Mini 1 (The Aircraft)

If a card with an aircraft symbol - a curved wing of a glider - is laid out, the player can try to bring a follower into play. The direction of the flight is determined by the mooring. A special cube with the double values one to three then determines how far the flight goes. The henchman may be used on the card that was rolled (also in occupied areas). It is not allowed to land in finished structures or on meadows. Anyone who flies off the field is also unlucky.

Mini 2 (The Dispatches)

Each player receives one of six followers who is placed on the scoring board as an additional counting figure. In scoring, you can now decide which of the two pieces is drawn. If the active player succeeds in getting one of the scoring figures on a dark field (5, 10, 15 etc.), he draws one of eight dispatch cards and can perform the action indicated on the card or receive two points. He can, for example, draw new cards or score certain areas directly.

Mini 3 (The Ferries)

The third mini expansion includes eight landscape tiles and eight small wooden ferries. The new landscape tiles show three or four paths, each ending at a jetty on a lake. After such a card has been created, a connection through one of the eight wooden ferries is closed. Two of the ends of the road are connected by this and now form a continuous road. Whenever a ferry route is extended, the ferry can be relocated on the map. If a ferry connection is cut as a result, it is counted immediately. The cards are marked with a small wooden boat (ferry) to distinguish them.

Mini 4 (The Gold Mines)

After a landscape tile with a gold symbol ( gold bar ) has been laid out, one of 16 “gold bars” made of wood is placed on this and an adjacent card. Whoever completes a building later in the game, on whose cards there are gold bars, may take it. It is important to collect as many of the gold bars as possible. The more you have of it, the more each individual counts in the final scoring.

Mini 5 (Magician & Witch)

After a card with a magician symbol - a pointed witch hat - has been laid out, the active player must either bring the witch or the magician into play or move it. The two figures are only placed on a street or in a city, but may not be in the same building. If a magician is in the building during a scoring, he earns one extra point per card of the building. If the witch is standing in a building during the scoring, the points are halved.

Mini 6 (The Robbers)

If a card with a robber symbol is put into play, the active player and the next player to have it in hand may place their robber figures on the scoring board as followers. If they get points in the further course of the game, the player with the robber receives half of the points once. This does not apply if the points have been stolen. Instead, the robber goes along. After receiving the points, the robber returns to the hand.

Mini 7 (The Crop Circles II)

Each of the six mini expansions also contains a card. Together they result in crop circles II . The rules for this are the same as for the previously separately released mini-expansion The Crop Circles . However, the cards themselves are designed differently.

Mini extensions monasteries

In 2014, two mini-extensions appeared, showing various German, Dutch and Belgian monasteries ("Dutch monasteries"). They each contain six landscape tiles and replace or supplement the previous monasteries. To distinguish them from further expansions, the cards are marked with a monk. In 2016 a third extension to the monastery appeared, which shows various Japanese sights. All extensions are available in stores.

In the case of the monasteries, you can choose between two different ratings: as usual as a monk or as an abbot, whereby this is placed on the side. When scoring as abbot, the abbot remains in the monastery until the end of the game and receives as many points as the number of cards that can be counted vertically and horizontally from the monastery.

The "German monasteries" show Andechs , Kloster Eberbach , Kloster Lorch , Kloster Maria Laach , Kloster St. Marienthal and Maulbronn Monastery .
The “Dutch monasteries” show the four Belgian monasteries: Abdij van Westmalle ( German  Trappist Abbey Westmalle ), Abdij van Averbode ( German  Abbey Averbode ), Sint-Trudoabdij Brugge ( German  St. Trudo Abbey ) and Abdij Onze Lieve Vrouw van Nazareth ( German  Abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth ) and the two Dutch monasteries: Klooster Huissen ( German  Monastery Huisen ) and Klooster Heilig Hart Steyl ( German  Monastery Herz Jesu Steyl ). This expansion is included with a version of the Dutch base game.
The "Japanese sights" show the two Buddhist temples Kinkaku-ji and Gojūnotō , the entrance gate Kaminari-mon to the Buddhist Sensō temple in Tokyo, Himeji Castle , Goryōkaku fortress and Kamakura Daibitsu . In contrast to the other two expansions, this expansion is designed in the design of the New Edition and is also included in a special version of the Japanese base game.

Half so wild II

The mini expansion Halb so wild II consists of twelve "half" triangle cards, which differ in design from Halb so wild I , but are compatible with them. On the cards there are also symbols for the expansion sheep and hills as well as for the crop circles . A small follower with a "C" is shown on the cards to separate further expansions.

Castles in Germany

Castles in Germany is a mini expansion from 2015. It consists of six double landscape cards with different castles in Germany, which were selected by voting in the Carcassonne Forum. At the beginning of the electoral process, there were several castles to choose from for the areas east, west, north, south and center; The fortress Königstein , the Wartburg and the castles Konradsheim , Eltz , Bentheim and Rieneck were able to prevail . The castles are distributed before the start of the game and can be placed during the game instead of drawing a landscape tile. The rating is similar to that of the monasteries. There are also three additional points for cities or roads that start at the castle. The extension has also been available in the New Edition design since 2019 .

A small castle gate with two towers is shown on the cards to distinguish it from other expansions.

Cathedrals in Germany

The mini-expansion Cathedrals in Germany was released at Easter 2016 . There are six different meadow maps with three or four paths that show different German cathedrals. As with the expansion of castles in Germany , the motifs were voted on in the Carcassonne Forum. The choice fell on the Cologne Cathedral , the Munich Frauenkirche , the Dresden Frauenkirche , the Church of St. Michaelis Hamburg , the Ulm Minster and the Aachen Cathedral .

When you draw such a card in the game you can either place your follower on the meadow or on the path or, as the archbishop, on the cathedral. If all paths adjoining the cathedral are completed, you get one point for the archbishop for each section of the path. The inns of the 1st extension lead to a doubling of the points; the dragon from the 3rd expansion eats the archbishop. At the end of the game, there is also one point per route section for unfinished routes.

The publishing house is aware of the inaccuracy in terms of content that the cathedrals should actually be in the cities, as they do in the first expansion, and that the cathedrals shown show both Catholic and Protestant churches, but the latter have no archbishops he goes into this in the instructions for the extension.

The cards are marked with a church for games without expansions.

The watchtowers

This mini-expansion, which was released at the end of 2016, is designed in the New Edition design and consists of twelve landscape tiles, each with a watchtower depicted. Each watchtower gives points when a street or city adjacent to it is completed. The eight cards surrounding it are examined; Depending on the symbol on the watchtower, there is one point for each tile with at least one street, two points for each meeple on this tile, three points for each monastery, two points for each coat of arms or one point for each tile with at least one district.

To distinguish it from other extensions, the top of a watchtower with three battlements is shown on the card .

Markets in Leipzig

This expansion appeared in September 2017 in an edition of 600 pieces in the design of the New Edition . The first 300 copies were sold exclusively at the Leipzig trade fair modell-hobby-spiel (are now also available online), are numbered and signed by the game designer Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and the managing director of the Leipzig trade fair Martin Buhl-Wagner; the other 300 copies are to appear for Spiel '17 . The expansion consists of four double cards which, when put together, represent the city of Leipzig and replace the normal starting card. It also includes a follower ( meeple ) each in one of 13 colors and two double cards for Carcassonne Amazon .
The four double cards represent districts of the city of Leipzig. The streets leading away from it enable the players to send the completed pieces to one of the districts. This gives him additional points for completed roads, cities, monasteries and at the end of the game meadows.

To distinguish them from other extensions, the cards are marked with the "double M" - the Leipziger Messe logo .

The fruit trees

The expansion was first introduced on the game But! presented in Duisburg 2018. It consists of six new landscape tiles and 24 fruit chips. It is designed in the design of the New Edition .

The baths

The expansion from 2019 is designed in the design of the New Edition .

mini expansion

The winter 2006 edition of the US magazine Games Quarterly came with a mini expansion. It consists of twelve new landscape tiles, including two river tiles. Elements from the first two expansions and Der Fluss II can be found again.

Cult, Siege and Creativity

The English mini-expansion consisting of twelve cards and was published by Rio Grande Games at the beginning of October 2008 .

Five of the six Cult landscape tiles correspond to the cult sites from Graf, König and their friends . The sixth card has been redesigned. The game principle of the four Siege cards is the same as in Die Katharer , but they are designed differently. Two other cards are completely white so that you can design your own landscapes (creativity) .

Fan extensions

In addition to the official expansions, there are also fan expansions that are invented and sometimes also produced by the fan community. These range from rule changes designed to keep the game balanced to attempts to sell them commercially. These can also reach the size of a large expansion. The publisher “tolerates such extensions, but wants to be informed and demands that it be clearly identified as unofficial”. Three of these extensions were created in cooperation with the Carcassonne Forum and have managed to be officially named by Hans im Glück Verlag. They were available for download on the publisher's homepage, but can currently only be accessed via a memento:

  • The city gates , 2014, 24 landscape tiles, author: Christof Struck and Hans-Dietrich Pester
  • The Easter Bunny , 2015, 22 landscape cards, author: Fritz Spinne
  • The Fortune Teller , 2016, eight landscape tiles, author: Jeffrey Putnam

Figures are also offered in additional colors to enable games with multiple players.

reception

Right from the start, the question arises about the meaning and use of the extensions, but also the offshoots. The publisher has received letters asking for more material on Carcassonne . In an interview with Michael Knauf, publisher Bernd Brunnhofer said shortly after the appearance of Die Jäger und Collector that a publisher had to make a profit because not all of the publisher's games were self-sufficient, which is why other games in the Carcassonne series are published. The argument is also made that demand is being met and the games are being enthusiastically received. Moritz Brunnhofer, the son of the publisher's founder, also wants to maintain product maintenance because "the relationship between effort and benefit [...] is better".

The more cards there are in play, the more likely that you will draw an unfavorable one. Cristward Conrad writes that "there is no doubt that a number of encores have their right to exist", "they are actually not useful for the game". He also writes that it is up to you whether you want to play the basic game alone, with a few or all of the extensions. Any ambiguities in the rules would then have to be accepted. He also suspects that (2010) the possibilities for possible extensions will certainly continue for another 10 years.

Overall, the seventh major expansion is the most controversial expansion. Christwart Conrad writes about the update of the expansion reviews: “THE CATAPULT falls completely outside the scope of the usual expansion. [...] Five points are also awarded for 'catching'. With this version, the entire table display becomes a side show. [...] Opinions are divided on this variant at the latest. It is a horror for the ambitious tactician […]. Others are only now really getting into the party mood and have a great time with this variation. "
