The abbey of Westmalle (Latin: Abbatia BM a Sanctissimo Corde Jesus ; Dutch: Abdij van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van het Heilig Hart ) is a Belgian Trappist monastery in Malle (Belgium) , Province of Antwerp region Kempen .

history

In 1794, the Antwerp bishop Cornelis Franciscus de Nelis (1736–1798) was able to persuade a group of Trappists from the Swiss monastery of La Valsainte , who had been sent by Augustin de Lestrange on a trip to Canada, to settle in Westmalle with the consent of their superior June). Prior was Arsène Durand, subprior Eugène de Laprade . On July 24th they fled from the advancing French Revolution and settled in Darfeld-Rosenthal Monastery in Westphalia . In 1802 23 Darfeld monks returned to Westmalle. From 1811 to 1814 they had to go into hiding in the vicinity of the monastery because of the dissolution of the order by Napoleon . In 1836 the priory was raised to the rank of abbey. Since then, a Trappist beer produced by the monks under the name Westmalle has been associated with the abbey .
