The Diocese of Antwerp (Latin Dioecesis Antverpiensis , Dutch Bisdom Antwerp ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Belgium with its seat in Antwerp .
history
Due to a reorganization of the dioceses in what was then the ' Spanish Netherlands ' (these comprised the present-day Netherlands , Belgium and northern France), the diocese of Antwerp was founded in 1559 at the instigation of Philip II . The parish was previously assigned to the diocese of Cambrai . It was now placed under the newly founded Archdiocese of Mechelen .
The diocese of Antwerp was dissolved in the course of the French Revolution and the parish was divided between the Archdiocese of Mechelen and the Diocese of Breda . In 1961 the diocese of Antwerp was re-established by spinning off from the Archdiocese of Mechlin-Brussels .
territory
The diocese of Antwerp includes almost the entire province of Antwerp , but without the city of Mechelen .
