The Diocese of Bruges (Latin Dioecesis Brugensis , Dutch Bisdom Brugge ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in the Belgian city of Bruges . It has existed for around 450 years and today essentially comprises the Belgian province of West Flanders .
history
- 1559: Foundation of the diocese of Bruges due to a reorganization of the dioceses in what was then the 'Habsburg Netherlands' (today includes the Netherlands , Belgium and northern France) at the instigation of Philip II. The parish was previously assigned to the diocese of Tournai . Subordination to the also newly founded Archdiocese of Mechelen .
- 1801: Dissolution of the Diocese of Bruges during the French Revolution ; the parish is assigned to the diocese of Ghent .
- 1834: The diocese of Bruges is reestablished by hiving off from the diocese of Ghent .
