The diocese of Ghent (Latin Dioecesis Gandavensis , Dutch Bisdom Gent ) has existed for around 450 years. The parish today essentially comprises the Belgian province of East Flanders .
history
- 1559 : Foundation of the diocese of Ghent due to a reorganization of the dioceses in what was then the 'Habsburg Netherlands' (today includes the Netherlands , Belgium and Northern France) at the instigation of Philip II. The parish was previously assigned to the diocese of Tournai . Subordination to the also newly founded Archdiocese of Mechelen . The cathedral chapter emerges from the Ghent Saint Bavo Abbey , which was dissolved at the same time and whose successor church is the cathedral of the diocese.
- 1801 : Reorganization of the church in the wake of the French Revolution ; Enlargement to include the districts of the simultaneously dissolved dioceses of Bruges and Ypres , as well as parts of the archdiocese of Mechelen .
- 1834 : Downsizing of the diocese due to the re-establishment of the diocese of Bruges .
