Lucas Van Looy SDB (born September 28, 1941 in Tielen ) is a Belgian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Ghent .

Life

Lucas Van Looy joined the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and made perpetual profession on March 6, 1968 . On September 12, 1970, Auxiliary Bishop Paul Constant Schoenmaekers from Mechlin-Brussels donated him to the priesthood . After further studies at the Catholic University of Leuven he acquired in 1972 the licentiate in missiology . He then worked in South Korea, among other things as a lecturer and in student pastoral care.

From 1984 he worked at the General Curia of the Salesians, from 1996 as Vicar General of the Order. Since 1995 he has also been the church assistant of the World Association of Catholic Teachers (WUCT).

Pope John Paul II appointed him 30th Bishop of Ghent on December 19, 2003 . The Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels, Godfried Danneels , donated him his episcopal ordination on February 1st of the following year in the St. Bavo Cathedral of Ghent . Co- consecrators were his predecessor Arthur Luysterman and the Bishop of Antwerp , Paul Van den Berghe . His motto is In nomine patris .

On November 27, 2019, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
