The first serving took place on December 10th of the same year. Local sales began in 1856, and the beer has also been available in stores since 1921.

Dark beer has also been brewed in Westmalle since 1856, but the current Dubbel is based on a recipe from 1926.

In 1934, the brewery developed the first Tripel beer, which is today an outstanding example of this type of beer.

In 1991 the brewery was modernized. Today's annual production is around 120,000 hectoliters and the filling capacity is 45,000 bottles per hour (2001).
