Abbot general ( Latin abbas generalis ) is called in some monastic or canon orders the leading higher / highest order superior ( supremus moderator ). As an abbot , he is ordained as an abbot .

One differentiates:
- the Abbot General as the supreme head of an overall order in the following centrally organized Catholic religious orders : Cistercians , Trappists (= Cistercians of the stricter observance) and Premonstratensians . Their abbots general have their seat in Rome today. They lead their orders in accordance with the respective religious law, represent their communities in the Holy See and are supported by employees of the so-called General Curia .
- the Abbot General as head of a monastery association with the Augustinian Canons .
- the Abbot General as head of a (formerly independent) Benedictine branch , for example among the Olivetans , Vallombrosans and New Year's Eve .
- Since 2010, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order has also had the title of Abbot General (in deviation from the rule) .
