Eamon Fitzgerald

Eamon Fitzgerald OCSO (* 1945 in Dublin ) is an Irish Roman Catholic religious and since 2008 Abbot General of the Cistercians of Stricter Observance .

Life

Eamon Fitzgerald joined the religious order of the Cistercians of Stricter Observance - Trappists - in Mount Melleray Abbey, founded in 1833 near Cappoquin , County Waterford , Ireland in 1966 . For many years he was the rector of the order in Abakaliki , Nigeria . In 1989 he returned to Mount Melleray and was elected abbot . Since 2002 he has also been a moderator in the General Chapter .

On September 8, 2008 he was elected by the General Chapter of the Cistercians of the Stricter Observance (Trappists) in Assisi as the new Abbot General , and thus also Archabbot of Cîteaux , based in Rome . He is the first Irishman to serve as Abbot General.
