Abakaliki
Abakaliki is the capital of the Nigerian state of Ebonyi and is located in the southeast of Nigeria, about 70 km east-southeast of Enugu at the intersection of the streets of Enugu, Afikpo and Ogoja . According to a calculation from 2011, the city has 172,180 inhabitants.
Abakaliki is the seat of a university founded in 1996. Agricultural products that are traded in the city include yams , cassava , rice and palm oil . Eggs and poultry are produced in large state breeding farms . Limestone , lead and zinc are found in the vicinity of Abakaliki . Lead was already mined in pre-colonial times and the limestone is mined for a cement factory in Nkalagu , about 35 km northwest of Abakaliki. The Guinea worm , for which Abakaliki was previously known, has been successfully controlled since the 1980s.
Abakaliki and its eastern surroundings form one of the 13 " Local Government Areas " (LGA) of the state of Ebonyi with an area of 584.09 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 133,065 inhabitants and thus a population density of 228 inhabitants per km². In the city itself there were 83,651 inhabitants. The majority belong to the Igbo people .
