The Sylvestrine ( Latin Congregatio Silvestrina Ordinis Sancti Benedicti , religious symbol CSilvOSB or OSBSilv ) are a male religious order in the Roman Catholic Church and belong to the Benedictine Confederation on. The community was founded in 1231 by St. Silvestro Guzzolini founded.

history

According to tradition, the priest Silvestro Guzzolini (1177–1267) from Osimo, Italy, was so moved by the death of his friend at the age of 50 that he decided to retreat to a grotto to live as a hermit . Three years later, in 1231, he founded a monastery in Monte Fano, in the hamlet of Fabriano . His confreres lived according to the Regula Benedicti , in addition they had imposed further ascetic exercises on themselves . From this, after the community had first designated itself as the Order of Monte Fano , after the death of the founder, the Benedictine Congregation of the New Year's Eve , which Pope Innocent IV confirmed in 1247.

After receiving the papal approval , Silvester built other monasteries in Umbria , Tuscany and Ancona . The prior general and the priors of the monasteries were elected for life; Pope Paul III restricted their term of office to three years each in 1642. In 1662 Pope Alexander VII united the Silvestrinians with the Vallombrosans and ordered that the general superiors should be provided by the Silvestrinians and the Vallombrosans every four years. In addition, joint constitutions should be drawn up. However, the two religious orders could not agree on common constitutions. In 1678 the two monastic orders were separated, and in the same year the chapter of the order of the Silvestrin gave itself its own statute, according to which no monk could become superior of a monastery if he had not previously been titular abbot . Titular abbots could only be appointed to those who had previously been novice masters , general secretary of the order, lecturer in theology , philosophy or the fine sciences, or librarian to Fabriano or who had performed an important service in the order. In its prime, the Silvestrians had 65 monasteries.

Habit

The habit of the New Year's Eve consists of a tunic with a wide scapular with a hood. In the choir and leaving the convent they carry a Cope . All items of clothing consist of a shiny Turkish-blue cloth, which is why the Silvestrians were also called "blue Benedictines". In bad weather and in large churches, a white robe is worn over the religious clothing. The Abbot General wears a purple Mozetta over his habit .

New Year's Eve women

The founder of the order had also founded a branch of the order for women, which was directly subordinate to the abbots of the New Year's Eve. Her rule of the order and her dress corresponded to that of the male order. In later years there were disagreements between the monks and the nuns of the order, the nuns separated from the New Year's Eve and joined another Benedictine congregation.

Goals and Awareness

During the general chapter of the New Year's Eve, which was held at the founding site, Pope John Paul II stated in his address on September 8, 2001:

“Dear New Year's Eve, the lofty and demanding goal that we must strive for is above all holiness. We must not forget this, especially in our time when we can perceive an ever stronger longing for God. We must direct our spirits to Him in our daily apostolate. It is in this consciousness that your Congregation is carried, to which the Holy Spirit has at all times called generous monks, distinguished by their example and their apostolic zeal. Let us only remind you of the more recent missionary bishops Giuseppe Bravi, Ilarione Sillani and Giuseppe Pagnani, Vicars Apostolic of Colombo; to Bede Beekmayer, the first chief shepherd born in Ceylon, and to Bernardo Regno, Bishop of Kandy. Even twenty years after his death, his reputation among the disenfranchised of the tea plantations and in his birthplace Fabriano is still alive. Special mention should also be made of the two pioneers of the foundation in the United States of America in 1910: Giuseppe Cipoletti and Filippo Bartoccetti, patient and fearless missionaries among the miners in Kansas. Finally, I would like to remember the Servant of God Abbot Ildebrando Gregori, whose canonization process has been initiated. "
