Silvestro Guzzolini (* around 1177 in Osimo near Ancona ( Italy ); † November 26, 1267 Fabriano ) was an Italian clergyman , abbot and founder of the Silvestrin order . He was canonized in 1598 .

history

Silvestro Guzzolini was born as the son of a noble lawyer . As the successor of his father he should also be a lawyer, so he studied in Padua and Bologna Law . Against the wishes of his father, he began the study of theology . He exercised his first priesthood in the Diocese of Osimo as a canon and worked as a pastor . The protracted arguments with his local bishop finally led him to live as a hermit in 1227 . He retired to a rock cave not far from Osimo and lived there in complete solitude for three years. Then other confreres joined him, this led to the fact that in 1231 he built a monastery on Monte Fano near Fabriano and lived together with his students according to the rules of St. Benedict of Nursia . In addition to the vows according to the Evangelical Councils of Poverty, Obedience and Chastity, Silvestro also attached great importance to fasting , pastoral care, sermons and the acceptance of confession . Under his direction, other monasteries were built, other monasteries looked for common ground and in a few years the religious community grew. On June 27, 1247, the congregation received approval from Pope Innocent IV and from then on it was called "Silvestriner".

Adoration

After his death, Silvestro Guzzolini was buried in the church of St. Silvestro on Monte Fano. The reliquary is still on the main altar today . In 1598 Pope Clement VIII canonized the founder of the order, the feast day was set for November 26th. The saint is depicted in a black Benedictine robe, additional attributes are a coffin with a male corpse or the presentation of Holy Communion by Mary . The depiction with the coffin goes back to the legend in which it is reported that he made the decision to become a hermit at the coffin of his best friend.
