Vijayawada ( Telugu : విజయవాడ ; also called Bezawada ) is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . With around one million inhabitants (2011 census) it is the third largest city in Andhra Pradesh. Vijayawada is located in the Krishna district about 275 km east-southeast of Hyderabad . The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Vijayawada . After the old capital Hyderabad was lost due to the separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 , Vijayawada should take over this function in the medium term and expand into the capital of Andhra Pradesh in the next few years. In 2015, however, Amaravati was named the capital and is now to be expanded instead.

  • Kanaka Durga Temple : The temple was supposedly built by Arjuna for the goddess Durga after receiving the Pasupataastram from Shiva . In the Vedas it is said that the temple deity Swayambhu ( self-manifested ) is very strong. Because of this and the frequent mention of the temple in religious texts (e.g. Bhagavad Gita ), it is a popular place of pilgrimage . The temple is on a nearby hill from which one can overlook the city. During the Dasahra festival, the believers come to the temple after a ritual bath in Krishna to celebrate pujas .
  • Gunadala Matha Shrine : In 1925, Brother Arlati Pime, Rector of St. Joseph's Orphanage, laid a beaten path on a nearby hill and placed a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche, which soon attracted believers. After numerous extensions, St. Mary's Church was built and inaugurated in 1971 . Once a year there is a big festival in honor of Mary.
