Nellore ( Telugu : నెల్లూరు Nellūru [ ˈnelːuːru ] Urduنیلور) is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . It is the capital of the Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district .

Residents

The city itself has around 505,000 inhabitants, 564,000 people live in the Nellore agglomeration (2011 census). The population development is increasing. In the city there are various high schools and colleges, which represent the educational offer. The most widely spoken languages in the city are Telugu and Tamil .

geography

The city has an average height of 18 meters above sea level. The region is more often affected by storms. The city of Chennai is about 170 kilometers further south . The airport can also be used from here. Nellore is otherwise connected to the state rail network and a trunk road.

tradition

The city's name is said to be derived from the Tamil word for rice. This is understandable because of the rice terraces surrounding the city. Even today, rice cake is still one of the city's specialties.

The city is an important tourist destination due to a large number of temples, some of which are also special cultural and historical treasures. The city's proximity to the sea also makes it attractive for tourism.

One of the most important personalities who once lived in the city is Tikkana Somayaji , a famous Telugic poet.

economy

The city's economic structure is primarily geared towards trade and public administration. It is an important mall for the entire district. It also offers medical and cultural care in the surrounding area. The only major industrial settlement is a battery factory. The public infrastructure needs further improvement.
