Ongole ( Telugu ఒంగోలు ) is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh .

geography

Ongole is the capital of the Prakasam district . It is located 15 km from the coast of the Bay of Bengal . Chennai is 270 km south. Vijayawada , the capital of Andhra Pradesh, is 125 km northeast.

At the 2011 census, the population of Ongole was 252,739.

history

The municipality was founded in 1876 and upgraded to a municipal corporation on January 25, 2012 .

On October 4, 1946, a serious railway accident occurred near Ongole : the express train from Madras to Calcutta (today: Kolkata ) collided with a freight train . 36 people died, 81 were also injured.

The national highway NH 16 (Chennai – Vijayawada) runs through the city.
