Guntur ( Telugu : గుంటూరు Guṇṭūru [ ˈɡuɳʈuːru ]) is the third largest city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . It has 743,354 inhabitants (2011 census) and is the administrative seat of the Guntur district . The agglomeration has about 1,028,667 inhabitants.

It is located in the Guntur Mandal in the Guntur Division . The city is also a suburb of Amaravati , the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, and falls under the jurisdiction of the APCRDA . The city is known for its educational and economic institutions, e-commerce companies, and agriculture. In the agricultural area around Guntur, the population lives from the cultivation of chilli, cotton and tobacco.

history

The oldest written mention of Guntur can be found as an engraving on objects from the reign of the Vengi Chalukya king Ammaraja I (922–929). Guntur also appears on two other inscriptions from 1147 and 1158. The old Sanskrit name of Guntur is Garthapuri.

Guntur became part of the Mughal Empire in 1687 when Aurangzeb conquered the Qutb Shāhī Sultanate . With the arrival of the French, the city achieved national and international importance. The French moved their seat from Kondavid fortress to Guntur in 1752 , probably because of the great availability of water through the two large reservoirs. The core of today's city was formed from this settlement. The Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu moved his capital from Chintapalli in the Krishna district to Amaravati. Because of his influence and generosity, many temples were built at Guntur. In 1788 the area fell under the control of the British East India Company and became a district of the Madras Presidency .

While observing the solar eclipse of August 18, 1868 from Guntur, Jules Janssen found a new line in the solar spectrum and thus helium. Even Norman Lockyer took place in October 1868 with observations from London the same lines. Both researchers are therefore considered to be the discoverers of helium.

With the opening of the railway line in 1890, the city quickly became a major market for agricultural products in the surrounding area. Over the past hundred years, the city has expanded considerably to the north and west. This area, which is called New Guntur , consists of many districts such as Brodipet or Arundalpet and suburbs such as Pattabhipuram , Chandramouli Nagar , Sita Rama Nagar or Brindavan Gardens .
