Krishna ( Telugu : కృష్ణా జిల్లా) is one of 13 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . The administrative seat is the city of Machilipatnam .

geography

With its 8,727 km², Krishna is one of the smallest districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Of the area only 664 km² are forested. In the north-west it borders on the district of Nalgonda in the state of Telangana , in the north on the district of Khammam , which also belongs to Telangana , in the east on the district West Godavari , in the south on the Bay of Bengal and in the west on the district Guntur . The coastal area is pretty flat. In contrast, there are several ranges of hills in the inland, of which the Kondapalli between Vijayawada and Nandigama is the longest. The most important rivers in the district are the Krishna , Muniyeru, Tammileru and Budameru.

climate

The climate is divided into four seasons. March to May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from mid-June to early October brings the most abundant rain. The northeast monsoon from mid-October to the end of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. And January and February are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average of rainfall in the district is 1034 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 686 mm and the northeast monsoon 250 mm of the annual rainfall. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. The coldest month is December (average 23.17 ° - daily minimum 18 °, maximum 28 °), the warmest is May (average 32.38 ° - minimum 27 °, maximum 38 °). During the Mosun season there is a humidity of up to 80 percent. This falls to 30 percent in the dry period.

population

The last census in 2011 counted 4,529,009 inhabitants. Of these, 2,268,312 were men (50.1 percent) and 2,260,697 women. In 1904, today's Guntur district split off from Krishna. Another downsizing took place in 1925 when what is now the West Godavari district split off.
