West Godavari ( Telugu : పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లా) is one of 13 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . The administrative seat is the city of Eluru .

geography

The district is located in the east of Andhra Pradesh . It is framed to the west by the Krishna district , to the north by the Khammam district in the state of Telangana , to the east by the East Godavari district and to the south by the Bay of Bengal .

The district has an area of ​​7742 km² and is therefore one of the smallest districts in Andhra Pradesh. Of the area, 812 km² (10.5 percent) are forested. The main rivers in the district are Godavari, Yerrakaluva and Bineru. The largest lake in Andhra Pradesh, Lake Kolleru, is located in the district.

The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons. April and May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from the second week of June to the second week of October brings the most abundant rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the end of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. The months of January to March are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average of precipitation is 1153 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 784 mm and the northeast monsoon 246 mm. Rain also falls in the summer months. The last census in 2011 counted 3,934,782 inhabitants. Of these, 1,963,184 were men (49.9 percent) and 1,971,598 women. In 2001, the Dalit numbered 728,963 (19.2 percent) and the Adivasi 96,659 (2.5 percent) people. Of the total number of residents, 808,591 people (20.55 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011. The majority of the population of West Godavari District speaks Telugu . There are 845 inhabited villages in the entire district.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the West Godavari district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase was only 3.45 percent between the last two censuses, but is still significant in absolute terms. From 2001 to 2011 the population increased by over 130,000 people. Significant places

The most populous town in the district is the main town Eluru with around 190,000 residents. Other important cities with over 100,000 inhabitants are Bhimavaram and Tadepalligudem .

economy

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. Mainly rice, tobacco, sugar cane and chilli are grown. In addition, fishing is an important industry. There are numerous small industrial companies in various branches throughout the district. In the cities, people live from trading in goods and services.

history

The district was created in 1925 by spinning off from the Krishna district . It belonged to Andhra State until 1956. Since then, West Godavari has been an administrative unit in the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh.

Politically, the district is now divided into the four tax districts Eluru, Jangareddigudem, Kovvur and Narasapur.
