Amaravati ( Telugu అమరావతి ) is the de facto capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . The planned city is located on the southern bank of the Krishna River in the Guntur district . It was built on a 217 square kilometer river bank and is to consist of 51% green areas and 10% water. The word "Amaravati" comes from the historic city of Amaravati , the ancient capital of the Shatavahana dynasty . The foundation stone was laid on October 22, 2015 in Uddandarayunipalem by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . The metropolitan areas of Guntur and Vijayawada are the largest suburbs of Amaravati and are to merge with them to form an integrated space. In 2019, several investors, including the World Bank, withdrew from the project.

location

The city is being built in the Guntur district on the banks of the Krishna River and is 40 kilometers southwest of Vijayawada and 32 kilometers north of Guntur.

history

In the area of modern Amravati, the first laws were enacted on the soil of modern Andhra about 2000 years ago. This legislative tradition came to an end with the fall of the Shatavahana empire around the 3rd century AD. When the new state of Andhra was formed shortly after India's independence in 1953 , Kurnool became its capital. In 1956, Andhra was united with the Telangana region to form the new federal state "Andhra Pradesh", but in 2014 it was again largely divided along the old borders into the two states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The capital of the former Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad , was in the area of Telangana. Hyderabad was designated as the capital of both states for a transitional phase. The question arose as to which capital the smaller Andhra Pradesh should have in the future. The decision was not made again for Kurnool, but for Amaravati as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. The city has been systematically expanded since then.

The foundation stone of the city was laid in 2015. The state government has commissioned the Singapore- based consortium Ascendas-Singbridge and Sembcorp Development to build the capital. The infrastructure of the new capital will be developed in phases over seven to eight years. The money to finance the new capital comes from the Indian government, international investors and the World Bank .

Since October 2016, most of the ministries and officials of the Andhra Pradesh government have been working in interim facilities in the Velagapudi area of Amaravati. In Hyderabad only a greatly reduced remnant rod remains.

Residents

In 2019 there were already around 100,000 inhabitants on the area of the city. Most of the residents speak the Telugu language . About 5.8 million people lived in the wider area around the city.

The city's master plan is based on Singapore. The city map was drawn up by two consultants from Singapore who were commissioned by the Indian government. Other international consultants are also involved in the construction of the city. The government plans Amaravati as a green and modern city that will serve as a model for other cities in the country.

The city will have nine thematic areas consisting of finance, justice, health, sports, media and electronics. Government buildings are being built in the city, designed by Norman Foster , Hafeez Contractor , Reliance Group and NRDC-India . Several IT and data centers are also under construction. A medical center for $ 1.8 billion has been under construction since 2017.

The proposed Amaravati high-speed rail line would connect the city with the nearby cities of Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali , would be 105 km long and would cost approximately $ 1.4 billion.

The city will be connected to the cities of Vijayawada and Guntur by bus routes and a motorway .

The Vijayawada Airport will link the city to the outside world.
