Shivpuri is a city with about 180,000 inhabitants and the capital of the district of the same name (Hindi: जिला jilā ) in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

location

The district of Shivpuri borders on Rajasthan to the west and Uttar Pradesh to the east . In the north-west is the Sheopur district , in the north the Gwalior district , in the north-east the Datia district , in the south the Ashok Nagar district and in the south-west the Guna district . The major cities of Gwalior and Jhansi are about 120 km northeast and 100 km east, respectively.

As is customary with Indian censuses, the male population exceeds the female population by around 15%. Mostly Hindi is spoken .

economy

The majority of the people (over 80%) live and work in the countryside; Commerce, crafts and services of all kinds are concentrated in the cities.

history

Shivpuri has played no significant role in Indian history either as a city or as a district. The city is first mentioned in the Mughal period (1564); from 1804 to 1817 the Scindia dynasty, residing in Gwalior, ruled . The British turned the wooded area into a hill station , to which they withdrew during the hot summer months.

Attractions

  • The Mahua Shiva Temple, built in the 1970s, is surrounded by an elongated wall that borders an inner courtyard.
  • In a park there is a remarkable memorial building ( chhatri ) of the last Scindia- Maharajas .
  • Painted in red, the Madhav Vilas Palace was the summer residence of the Scindia Maharajas.
  • An abundance of bird and mammal species live in the 354 km² Madhav National Park ; The park was once the preferred hunting ground for the Mughal rulers residing in Delhi or Agra , as well as the Scindia Maharajas of Gwalior .
  • A castle-like structure was built on the highest point of the park especially for King George V's hunting visit in 1911.
