The Datia district ( Hindi : दतिया जिला) refers to a district in the Bundelkhand region in the north of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The district administration is located in the city of Datia .

The 2902 km² (according to other data 2038 km²) large district is located in the north of Madhya Pradesh north of the metropolis of Jhansi . The Sindh River flows along the western border as well as through the north of the district.

population

In the 2011 census, the population was 786,754. 10 years earlier it was 664,159. The gender ratio is 873 women for every 1,000 men. The literacy rate is 72.63% (84.20% for men, 59.41% for women). The Hindus form the largest religious group with 95%. 3.62% are Muslims , 1.01% are followers of Buddhism .

The area around Datia belonged to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. To the Maurya empire of the emperor Ashoka ; the Gujarra rock edict commemorates this. In the 4th / 5th In the 17th century AD it was part of the Gupta Empire , which was later replaced by the kings of the Kalachuri dynasty. In the High Middle Ages, the Gond rulers temporarily took power; in the 14th century the Bundheli- Rajputs from Gujarat immigrated . From 1577 the area used for hunting purposes was under the rather nominal sovereignty of the Mughal Empire . In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Bundelkhand region came under the influence of the Marathas ; since the middle of the 19th century the area was under British control. After India's independence (1947), the region belonged to the princely states of the Central Provinces , from which the state structure of Vindhya Pradesh emerged in the years after 1948, which was integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
