Indore ( Hindi : इन्दौर ज़िला) is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The 3898 km² district is located in the west of Madhya Pradesh. The district administration is located in the eponymous city of Indore .

In the 2011 census, the population was 3,276,697. Ten years earlier it was 2,465,827. The gender ratio is 928 women per 1000 men. The literacy rate is 80.87% (87.25% for men, 74.02% for women). The Hindus form the largest religious group with 83%. 12.67% are Muslims, 2.19% are followers of Jainism , 0.78% are Sikhs .

history
Indore District was established in 1956 when Madhya Bharat became part of the newly established state of Madhya Pradesh. It extends over parts of the former princely state of Indore .
