Sehore ( Hindi सीहोर ) is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

Geography, Climate and Transport

The district is located in the middle of the Malwa plateau north of the Vindhya mountain range . The height above sea level varies between approximately 450 and 600 m. The climate is characterized by four seasons. Winter lasts from late November to late February. The hot season lasts from March to mid-June. The southwest monsoon characterizes the period from mid-June to the end of September and the period from October to November is marked by the retreat of the monsoon. January is the coldest and May the hottest month of the year, whereby the temperature can rise to 45 ° C on very hot days. In 2013, according to official information, 1725.39 km² (26%) of the district was covered with forest and 3968.7 km² (60%) were considered usable for arable farming. The average annual rainfall was 1,217.7 mm and 2,297 km² of agricultural land was irrigated. The associated decrease in the quality of the groundwater and the lowering of the groundwater level represent a serious problem.

The district capital of the same name, Sehore, is located about 29 kilometers south of the state capital Bhopal and is connected to it by a rail link with a connection to the Western Railway network. The National Highway 67 , the Bhopal Dewas connects, passing through the district.

The gender ratio was 0.918, below the average for both Madhya Pradesh (0.930) and that of all of India (0.940). The literacy rate of 70.06% (80.83% for men, 58.33% for women) was about the Indian average. 88.7% of the population were Hindus , 10.5% Muslim and 0.5% Jains . Other religious communities combined made up only 0.3%. 81% of the population lived in the countryside.

history

During the British colonial period, the area of the district belonged to the princely state of Bhopal and came under the administration of the Central India Agency . After the state of Bhopal joined India in 1949, it first became a state of its own, but then became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956. Initially, the Sehore district also included the state capital (from 1956) Bhopal, but in 1972 this and its surroundings were transformed into a separate district.
