Dewas is a city ( Municipal Corporation ) in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

The city is located on the national highway NH 3 ( Mumbai - Agra ), 32 km north-northeast of Indore . The NH 86 leads from Dewas to Bhopal, 140 km to the east .

In the 2011 census, the population was 289,550. The gender distribution was 1,076 men for 1,000 women. 78% of the population were Hindus , 20% Muslim .
Until the middle of the 20th century, Dewas was the capital of the princely state of Dewas . The city has been its administrative seat since the founding of the Dewas district in 1948.
