Rewa ( Hindi : रीवा , Rīvā [ ˈriːʋɑː ]; also Rewah ) is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh with around 235,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located in the Baghelkhand region in northeast Madhya Pradesh. The city was founded around 1400 by Baghel Rajputs (warrior caste). The city is the administrative seat of the district of Rewa and from 1597 was the capital of the princely state of Rewa , from 1871 to 1931 the capital of the Baghelkhand Agency and from 1948 to 1956 of Vindhya Pradesh . Rewa is about 130 kilometers south of Prayagraj . The name comes from the Narmada river , which is also called Rewa .

Rewa is surrounded by forest, which for its tiger 's population is known, the tiger reserve of Bandhavgarh is here. Together with Kanha Kisli , the Bandhavgarh Forest is said to have served as the backdrop for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book . Most of the white tigers in captivity today are descendants of a white tiger cub that was caught here in 1950.

economy

Rewa is connected to other cities by road and is a trading center for bricks, grain and wood. Clothing weaving and wood carving are important industries in the city.

There is also a lot of limestone and coal in the region , which makes it a center of the cement industry . Nearby there are JAYPEE cement factories in Bela , Naubasta and Bhagwar, among others . The JAYPEE Group also has its own housing estate for employees in Rewa known as "Jaypee Nagar".

Asia's largest cement factory, operated by Prism Cement , is located near Rewa in Sajjanpur .

Numerous Birla Group companies such as Vindhya Tele Links and Birla Ericson are located in Rewa.

Train: Rewa is connected to the city of Satna by the 50 km long route . Satna is again on the Mumbai-Haora route, which also stops in Prayagraj.

Road: Rewa is located on India's longest road, the NH 7, from Varanasi to Kanyakumari via Mirzapur , Katni , Jabalpur , Nagpur , Hyderabad , Bangalore . The NH 27 to Prayagraj and the NH 75 from Ranchi to Gwalior run through the city.

Air traffic: The nearest airports are in Khajuraho and Prayagraj.
