Bela Pratapgarh ( Hindi : बेला प्रतापगढ़ Belā Pratāpgaṛh [ ˈbeːla prʌˈt̪aːpɡʌɽʱ ]), Bela for short , is a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
It is located in the southeast of the Awadh (Oudh) region around 60 kilometers north of Prayagraj on the banks of the Sai River . At the time of the 2011 census, Bela Pratapgarh had 76,133 inhabitants. The city is the administrative seat of the Pratapgarh district .
Bela was founded by the British in 1802 as a quarter for the auxiliary troops stationed in the princely state of Oudh near the city of Pratapgarh , which was a center of power in the region thanks to its 17th century fortress. Bela got its name after a temple of the goddess Bela Bhawani on the bank of the Sai. After the Indian uprising of 1857 , the British annexed Oudh and made Bela the administrative seat of the newly established Pratapgarh district.
The names Bela and Pratapgarh are sometimes interchanged. This is the name of the train station in Bela Pratapgarh Junction . The railway lines from Lucknow via Raebareli to Varanasi and from Prayagraj to Faizabad cross at this station . The road connection from Prayagraj to Faizabad (National Highway 96) also runs via Bela.
