Pratapgarh ( Hindi : प्रतापगढ़ , Urdu : پرتاپ گڑھ, Pratāpgaṛh [ prʌˈtɑːpɡʌɽʱ ]; formerly Partabgarh ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

It is located in the southeast of the Awadh (Oudh) region around 60 kilometers north of Prayagraj and eight kilometers southwest of the district capital Bela (Bela Pratapgarh). At the time of the 2011 census, Pratapgarh had 15,071 residents. The city is eponymous for the Pratapgarh district .

Pratapgarh goes back to a fortress that the Rajput prince Pratap Singh founded in 1617. The city was named after him ( garh means "fortress"). In the 18th century, the fortress was contested as a center of local power before it came under the rule of the Nawabs of Oudh in the 19th century. In 1802 the British founded the nearby Bela as quarters for the auxiliary troops stationed in Oudh . After the Indian uprising of 1857 , Oudh was annexed and incorporated into British India . After the annexation, the British founded the Pratapgarh district, of which Bela became the capital.

The names Pratapgarh and Bela are sometimes interchanged, so the train station in Bela Pratapgarh Junction is called .
