Emil Joseph Lengeling

Emil Joseph Lengeling (born May 26, 1916 in Dortmund ; † June 18, 1986 in Münster ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and liturgical scholar .

Life

Lengeling studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1935 to 1942 . In 1938 he completed his licentiate in philosophy. On October 26, 1941, he was ordained a priest in Rome for the diocese of Münster . In the same year he became a licentiate in theology, chaplain and religion teacher in Ahlen . From 1942 to 1945 he did military service.

After the end of the war he went back to Rome to continue his studies, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1947. As a chaplain at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche he then came to Duisburg-Hamborn and also in 1947 to the St. Martini Church in Wesel . At the same time he was a religion teacher at the state high school and at the municipal girls' high school in Wesel.

In 1950 Lengeling became a tutor and librarian at the Episcopal Collegium Borromaeum in Münster. At the university there he resumed his studies and served as a religion teacher at the Paulinum grammar school , the Schiller grammar school and the council grammar school in Münster. In 1952 he passed the state examination in Latin, philosophy and religion and became a student trainee. From 1952 to 1958 he was Subregens and lecturer in liturgy at the seminary in Münster as well as Magister Caeremoniarum in the cathedral chapter, from 1954 to 1958 lecturer in pastoral liturgy in advanced training for priests and from 1956 to 1959 secretary of the council for the promotion of the liturgical apostolate in the diocese of Münster .

After completing his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (1958), Lengeling first became a private lecturer in liturgical science in Munich in 1959, then professor and director of the seminar for liturgical science at the Catholic theological faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He held this position until 1981. 1961/62 he was dean, 1962/63 vice dean of the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Münster and 1971/72 dean of the department of Catholic theology.

As a liturgical scholar, Lengling held functions in numerous specialist committees. From 1959 to 1974 he was chairman of the liturgy commission of the diocese of Münster, from 1960 a member of the liturgical commission of the Fulda Bishops' Conference , from 1963 to 1969 a member of the commission for the praise of God , 1965 to 1981 member of the liturgy section of the Concilium magazine , from 1966 more permanent Adviser to the Liturgical Commission of the German Bishops' Conference and member of the Liturgical Institute in Trier, from 1967 to 1971 member of the Catholic-Protestant Commission for the joint translation of the Psalms and the liturgical pericopes and from 1974 to 1984 Scientific Advisory Board of the Catholic Biblical Works in Stuttgart .

In 1962 he became a member, and in 1972 a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

In 1966 he received the title of Papal House Prelate .
