Katni (also known as Murwara ) is a city ( Municipal Corporation ) in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

Katni is the capital of the district of the same name . The city is about 90 km north-northeast of the city of Jabalpur , where the division's administration is located. The Katni river flows west of the city in a northeast direction.

The city had 221,883 inhabitants at the 2011 census.

Katni is located on an important railway junction. At Katni, the NH 78 road branches off to Umaria from the NH 7 (Jabalpur– Rewa ). Limestone and bauxite are mined near Katni. The arms industry is an important branch of the economy in Katni.
