Dewas ( Hindi : देवास ज़िला) is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .
The 7020 km² large district is located in the west of Madhya Pradesh. The district administration is located in the eponymous city of Dewas .

In the 2011 census, the population was 1,563,715. 10 years earlier it was 1,308,223. The gender ratio is 942 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate is 69.35% (80.30% for men, 57.76% for women). The Hindus form the largest religious group with 88%. 11% are Muslim .

history
Dewas District was established on November 1, 1956 when Madhya Bharat became part of the newly established state of Madhya Pradesh. It extends over parts of the former princely states of Dewas Junior and Dewas Senior and parts of the princely states of Gwalior , Dhar , Bhopal and Holkar .
