The Sidhi district ( Hindi सीधी ज़िला ) is a district in the historical region Baghelkhand the east of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The administrative center is the city of Sidhi , which has around 70,000 inhabitants .

geography

The Sidhi district is bounded in the west and in the north by the rivers Banas and Son . Neighboring districts are the Shahdol district in the west, the Rewa district in the north and the Singrauli district in the east, and the state of Chhattisgarh borders in the south .

The height of the district is between 250 (on the Son River) and 500  m . The average annual rainfall is about 1060 mm, of which about 90% falls during the summer monsoon season .

Administrative division

Sidhi District is divided into six administrative districts ( Tehsils or Subdivisions ): Gopadbanas, Sihawal, Rampur Naikin, Majhauli, Churhat and Kusmi. It consists of the city of Sidhi, three small towns - Churhat (approx. 15,000 inhabitants), Majhauli (approx. 12,000 inhabitants) and Rampur Naikin (approx. 12,000 inhabitants) and approx. 1000 villages.

Hindu and tribal population ( scheduled tribes ) dominate in the villages in rural areas (about 95%); A not inconsiderable number of Muslims also live in the cities (around 20%). In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by around 24% to around 1.13 million, with the male population only exceeding that of the female by around 4%. About 90% of the population lives in rural villages; on average around 40% of people (significantly more in rural regions) are illiterate. They speak Hindi and the regional dialects Bagheli and Gondi .

The Sidhi district is still largely agricultural; only on the outskirts of the city of Sidhi there are a few smaller industrial companies. Only four places have a rail connection.

history

The area around Sidhi belonged from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. To the Maurya Empire and the Shunga Empire . In the 4th / 5th In the 19th century the Gupta Empire came about , which was later replaced by the kings of the Kalachuri dynasty. In the High Middle Ages, the Gond rulers took power; However, from 1577 they came under the political and cultural influence of the Mughal Empire under Akbar I. After that, the region came under the influence of the Marathas in the 17th and 18th centuries ; since the middle of the 19th century the area belonging to the princely state of Rewa was under British control. After India's independence (1947), the region belonged to the princely states of the Central Provinces , from which the state of Madhya Pradesh emerged in 1950. The Sidhi District was established in 1947; in 2008 the newly created Singrauli district was separated.

Attractions

There are no historical buildings or archaeological sites in the Sidhi district. Only the Sanjay National Park , which extends in parts in the south of the district, is of tourist interest .
