River bed of the Banas |
The Banas is a left tributary of the Chambal in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
The Banas rises 5 km southwest of Kumbhalgarh in the Khamnor hills of the Aravalli Mountains at an altitude of about 1000 m . It initially flows 30 km in a southerly direction before turning east and breaking through the mountain ranges of the Aravalli Mountains, which run in a north-south direction. It is then dammed by two smaller dams (Bagheri-Ka-Naka and Nandsamand). It passes the cities of Nathdwara and Rajsamand . The Banas continues its course towards east-northeast. It flows 10 km south of Bhilwara and shortly afterwards takes Berach and Menali from the right and the Kothari from the left. 40 km east of Bhilwara, the Banas turns to the north and a little later to the northeast. It flows through the reservoir of the Bisalpur dam , into which the Khari also flows. The Mashi flows into the Banas near the city of Tonk coming from the north. The Banas flows a further 100 km to the east before it changes its flow direction to the south at the confluence of the Morel and cuts through a mountain range. 40 km downstream, the Banas meets the Chambal, which flows eastwards. The Banas does not have water all year round. In the summer months it falls dry in places. In addition, its water is used for irrigation purposes. The Banas has a total length of 512 km. Its catchment area covers 45,833 km².
The river of the same name Banas ( West Banas River ) also has its headwaters in the Aravalli Mountains, but flows in a south-westerly direction.
