Kumbhalgarh ( Hindi : कुंभलगढ़ or कुम्भलगढ़, kumbhalagaṛh) or Kumbhalmer is the name of a 15th century fortress in the northwest Indian state of Rajasthan . After Chittorgarh it as one of several terms of area, the second largest fortress in Rajasthan and since 2013 mountain fortresses ( Hill fort ) and UNESCO - World Heritage Site recognized.
location
Kumbhalgarh is located approx. 100 km (driving distance) north of the city of Udaipur on an approx. 950 to 1100 meter high ridge of the Aravalli Mountains . The remarkable Jain temples of Ranakpur are only about 30 km away.
history
Built the fortress of Kumbha , the Rana of Mewar , both as a bulwark against the advancing Islam and against the hostile Rajputenstaaten - especially Marwar - in the years 1443-58. According to tradition, the fort was taken only once because the defenders had no more drinking water. In 1535 the 13-year-old Prince Udai Singh II was brought here to safety from the besieged fortress of Chittorgarh.
architecture
The facility is surrounded by a wall approx. 36 kilometers long, on average 12 meters high and 8 meters thick, with a total of 7 gates ( pol ); Large parts of the wall are provided in the lower area with unusual - and for the military architecture of the time very modern - rounded slopes . Numerous buildings can be found within these walls: 360 temples alone were counted (including many Jain temples, but also a Ganesha temple and a Hanuman temple), but also former residential houses and a royal palace. The buildings are distributed over several hills, sometimes at a greater distance from each other. From higher temples and especially from the upper floors of the Badal Mahal Palace , some of which are painted with paintings, there is an impressive view of the surrounding wooded hill country.
