Girolamo Faba
Girolamo Faba , also called Hieronymus (active around the middle of the 16th century) was an Italian priest who became famous for his miniature carvings and came from Cænifium in Calabria .
Life
Faba was a priest in Calabria. Among other things, he created a Passion of Christ and a carriage with inmates in miniature carving, which was described in the Allgemeine Theaterzeitung as “The Carrosse of the Calabrese Girolamo Faba, which with two horses, the coachman and two people inside, is no larger than a grain of barley . ”A description in the general artist lexicon by Johann Rudolf Füssli , who called Faba Hieronymus, states:“ A carrosse of wood the size of a grain of wheat; with the same are a man and a woman, the coachman and two oxen. "
He worked in hazelnut shells and with boxwood . Works in the Dresden Green Vault were compared with Faba's works. Eugen von Philippovich assumes that Faba was also known under the name Faber and assigns him carvings in fruit pits. In addition to carving, Faba also worked as a shoemaker, tailor, painter and copperplate engraver. His small works of art were delivered to the Spanish King Philip II , Emperor Kral V , the French King Franz I and "some other potentates as real miracle pieces."
