Mashi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mashi are a clan of the Lozi in Namibia . They are closely related to the Mafwe , whose language Fwe they speak.

The Mashi are among the Caprivians who live in the Zambezi region in the far northeast of the country. Their settlement area was the homeland Ostcaprivi from 1976 to 1990 .

They are led by a king , the Fumu , who has been Joseph Tembwe Mayuni since 2004 . He heads the traditional administration with its headquarters in Choi . Unlike other traditional groups, they oppose state independence for the Caprivi Strip .

The Mashi have been managing the touristically important conservancies Mashi and Mayuni on the Kwando since 2003, with an area of almost 460 square kilometers and around 4700 inhabitants (as of 2011).
