Joseph Tembwe Mayuni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Tembwe Mayuni (* 20th century in South West Africa ) is the king of the Mashi , a Lozi clan in the Caprivi Strip , in the Zambezi region , in the extreme northeast of Namibia . As Fumu, he has headed the traditional administration of the Mashi, based in Choi , since 2004 .

His status as king has been disputed for years.

Mayuni speaks, like his counterpart Liswani III. the Masubia , clearly against a state independence of the Caprivi Strip. This wish led to the Caprivi conflict in the late 1990s .

Mayuni is an advocate of nature conservation far beyond the borders of Namibia and campaigned for the legal use of Namibian ivory reserves as early as 1997 at CITES . Mayuni is considered to be the initiator of the first conservancies in the region. He received various awards for his nature conservation initiatives.
