The approximately 784 km long Son ( Hindi : सोन ; also Sone or Soane ) is a southern tributary of the Ganges in northern India . It is the largest southern tributary of the Ganges and flows through the states of Chhattisgarh , Madhya Pradesh , Uttar Pradesh , Jharkhand and Bihar .
course
The Sun rises in the Vindhya Range in Dhanpur in the state of Chhattisgarh, near the Narmada source. From there it first flows in a northerly direction, then meets the Kaimur Mountains and makes an arc to the east. From there on, the Son flows parallel to the Kaimur mountain range, which runs in an east-west direction. In a short section it flows through the Sonbhadra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, then it forms the border between Bihar and Jharkhand, before it enters the Ganges plain of Bihar and flows into the Ganges west of Patna . The largest city on the bank of the river is Dehri .
Barrages
The Son is jammed twice:
- Bansagar dam ( Madhya Pradesh ), length of the dam 405 m
- Indrapuri barrage ( Bihar ), length of the dam 1407 m
mythology
Under the Sanskrit name Shona ( शोण Śoṇa ) the son appears in numerous works of ancient Indian literature such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana . In the descriptions of India by ancient Greco-Roman geographers, a river called Sonos or Sonus is mentioned, which could be identical to the Son. However, the fact that Megasthenes and Arrian name a river called Erannoboas as a tributary of the Ganges in addition to the Sonos contributes to the confusion . The name of the latter river could be a rendition of Hiranyabahu , an epithet of the Son also documented in Sanskrit literature.
