Umaria is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

The area is 4076 km². The administrative seat is the city of Umaria with 84,261 inhabitants.

Umaria has a gender ratio of 950 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 65.89%, an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 96.2% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2.5% are Muslims , 0.1% are Christians , and 1.1% did not indicate any religious affiliation or belonged to other religions. 16% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
