The district of Vidisha ( Hindi : विदिशा जिला) is a district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh with about 1.5 million inhabitants. The administrative and economic center is the city of Vidisha, with a population of around 160,000 . The district was established in its current form in 1956.

geography

The district of Vidisha is located in the Vindhya Mountains in the center of the state of Madhya Pradesh at an altitude of 430  m . It borders in the northwest on the Ashoknagar district , in the east on the Sagar district , in the south on the Raisen district , in the southwest on the Bhopal district and in the northwest on the Guna district . The most important rivers are the Betwa and their tributaries Bina and Halali . The most important cities are Vidisha (approx. 160,000), Basoda (approx. 75,000) and Sironj (approx. 60,000).

Hindus dominate the rural villages (approx. 88%); there is also a not inconsiderable number of Muslims in the cities (approx. 10%). In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by around 20% to around 1.45 million, with the male population exceeding the female by around 5%. About 77% of the population lives in rural villages; a third of the people (mostly women) are considered illiterate. Mostly Hindi is spoken .

economy

Agriculture has traditionally played the dominant role in the district's economic life; Crafts, trade and smaller industrial and service companies have settled in the cities. In the far west of the district is the dam of the Halali reservoir , which was completed in 1973 and used to generate energy .

History and sights

The area around Vidisha played a not insignificant role in Indian history. B. the later emperor Ashoka (r. 268–232 BC) governor for a time. A few kilometers southwest of Vidisha are the Buddhist site of Sanchi , classified as World Heritage , the Heliodoros Column and the Udayagiri Cave Temples . The small town of Gyaraspur has some, mostly ruined, Hindu temples , but they still bear witness to their former splendor. In the northeast of the district is the place Udaipur with its temple district, which is well worth seeing, but also the remains of the temple of Pathari , especially the Gadarmal temple of Badoh, deserve attention.
