The district Raisen ( Hindi : रायसेन जिला) is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh with around 1.4 million inhabitants. The administrative and economic center is the town of Raisen, with a population of around 50,000 . The district was established in its current form in 1956.

geography

The Raisen district is located in the Vindhya Mountains in the center of the state of Madhya Pradesh at an altitude of 450  m . It borders in the north with the district Vidisha , in the east with the district Sagar , in the southeast with the district Narsimhapur , in the south with the district Hoshangabad and in the southwest and west with the district Sehore . The most important rivers are Narmada and Betwa and their tributary Bina . The most important cities are Raisen (approx. 50,000), Mandideep (65,000), Begamganj (approx. 40,000) and Bareily (approx. 35,000).

Hindus dominate the rural villages (approx. 90%); there is also a not inconsiderable number of Muslims in the cities (approx. 9%). In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by around 20% to around 1.4 million, with the male population exceeding the female population by around 12%. About 77% of the population lives in rural villages; a third of the people (mostly women) are considered illiterate. Mostly Hindi is spoken .

Agriculture has traditionally played the dominant role in the district's economic life; The main crops are soybeans , lentils , wheat and rapeseed . Crafts, trade and smaller industrial and service companies have settled in the cities.

History and sights

The area around Raisen and Vidisha played a not insignificant role in Indian history. B. the later emperor Ashoka (r. 268–232 BC) governor in Vidisha for a time. A few kilometers southwest of Vidisha (northwest of Raisen) is by the UNESCO as a world heritage site classified Buddhist site of Sanchi . But the Satdhara and Sonari stupas and the rock paintings of Bhimbetka, which are also part of the world cultural heritage, are worth seeing. Further attractions are the unusual medieval Shiva temple in Bhojpur with its huge lingam and the small stupas in the village of Murelkhurd (near Pipalia ) about 5 km west of Bhojpur . Raisen Fort, located on a mountain, was built between the 13th and 16th centuries.
