Sagar is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

The area is 10,252 km². The administrative seat is the city of Sagar .

The population in 2011 was 2,378,458 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 17.63%. Chhindwara has a gender ratio of 893 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district had a literacy rate of 76.46% in 2011 , an increase of almost 9 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is above the Madhya Pradesh average and also slightly above the national average. Almost 92% of the population are Hindus and around 2% are Muslims . Jainas make up 2.7% of the population. 15% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
