James Buckle (born around 1854 in Belfast ; † November 9, 1884 there ) was an Irish football player .

Career

Buckle, a full-time accountant at Methodist College Belfast , was a founding member of Cliftonville FC and appeared in the club's first game - the first ever for an Irish club - against a team of rugby players called Quidnuncs on September 27, 1879 . The game, which was played under the rules of the Scottish Football Association , took place during heavy rains, which left the field under water. A correspondent for the Belfast News Letter wrote about the game, which ended in a 2-1 win for the Quidnuncs: "Since the game was new to most of the players, the game cannot be considered a good performance," handball "came too regularly. "

As a result, he was not part of the squad in the two 0-1 final defeats in the Irish Cup in the seasons 1880/81 and 1881/82. Although he had not participated in the selection game for the first international match of the Irish national team , he moved in place of his club mate John Waring in the team. The game against the English selection ended in a 0-13 defeat.

Buckle was then nominated for the games against Wales in February 1882 and for a new clash against England in March 1883, but had to cancel both times.

Also in the season 1884/85 Ulster started with Buckle as captain. A few weeks later, Buckle died of typhus at the age of 30 in his hometown of Belfast .
