The Khargone District ( Hindi खरगोन ज़िला - also known as West Nimar District ) is a district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The administrative and economic center is the city of Khargone (also known as Khargaon ) with around 125,000 inhabitants .

The district of Khargone borders on the districts of Buldhana and Jalgaon in the state of Maharashtra to the south . To the west the district is bounded by the Barwani district ; it is bordered by the Dhar district to the north-west, the Indore district to the north, the Dewas district to the northeast, the Khandwa district to the east and the newly created 2003 district of Burhanpur to the south-east .

The Khargone district is divided into nine administrative districts ( Tehsils or subdivisions ): Barwaha, Bhagwanpura, Bhikangaon, Gogaon, Jhiranya, Kasrawad, Khargone, Maheshwar and Segaon with a total of well over 1300 villages and - besides the city of Khargone - only five medium-sized or smaller ones Cities: Barwaha (approx. 30,000), Bhikangaon (approx. 18,000), Kasrawad (approx. 25,000), Maheshwar (approx. 30,000) and Sanawad (approx. 42,000).

Hindus dominate the rural villages (about 98%); about 15 to 20% of the urban population are Muslims . In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by a good 20% to around 1.87 million, with the male population exceeding the female population by around 5%. About 85% of the population lives in rural villages. According to the 2011 census, 62.7% were literate (among women 53%). The values ​​were below the average for Madhya Pradesh (70.6%, or 60.0%) and all of India (74.0%, or 65.5%). The predominantly spoken language is Hindi and various Bhil dialects.

The Khargone district is characterized to a very high degree by agriculture, with migrant workers - especially in the numerous cotton fields - playing a not unimportant role to this day. Only in the few cities are there a few larger shops and craft businesses as well as banks, hospitals and secondary schools. Most of the villages are connected to the regional transport network by bus routes; There are only smaller regional train stations in Sanawad and Barwaha.

history

The Nimar region (old name) formerly belonged to the Sultanate of Malwa , which was ruled from the royal seat of Mandu and was subjugated in 1531 by Bahadur Shah , Sultan of Gujarat . In 1561, the region was the Mughal emperor Akbar I conquered and the Mughal Empire annexed; in 1740 it fell to the Marathas Empire and was ruled by the Holkar dynasty. The area had been under British control since 1818 . After the independence of India (1947) or after the States Reorganization Act of 1956, the area came to the newly created state of Madhya Pradesh . Within Madhya Pradesh, the two districts East Nimar and West Nimar emerged . On May 25, 1998, the West Nimar district was divided into the two districts of Barwani and Khargone.

Attractions

In the area of ​​the Khargone district, which is otherwise hardly developed for tourism, is the temple city of Maheshwar , which is particularly sacred to the followers of the Hindu god Shiva .
