The Holkar were an influential ruling dynasty in British India . They belong to the clans of the Maratha rulers in India.

Members of the Holkar family ruled Indore from the 18th century under British protectorate until shortly after India gained independence in 1947.

In the capital of the same name, Indore, there are palace buildings of the Maharajas of Indore. Maharajah Shri Yeshwant Rao Holkar II Bahadur, an advocate and lover of European modernism , had his palace built and furnished in 1933 by his friend and mentor, the German architect Eckart Muthesius .
